Is Yoga Hinduism?
I can know a path without walking it. One does not need to walk a path to know a path. I know roughly how to get from here to Paris from maps, but I have never walked to Paris.
There is a great deal of fear revealed in these 3 simple sentences.
This is what he stands for, he supports all religions except for Christianity and Islam, and he condemns Christians, Muslims, and Christian-biased Westerners. So he condemns not only the beliefs but also the morality & views of well over 3.6 billion people on the planet…
http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html
If 3.5 - 4 billion of these people signed onto yogaforums and disagreed with him and his little tag team buddy, they would all be anti-Hindu racists, all of them. On the other hand, they posit that sometimes in the next century the U.S. will “become Hindu” simply because Americans may do yoga (whatever form it may be), or believe in reincarnation or karma (“you reap what you sow”)…
Meanwhile, westerners should “stop sending missionaries” (as if “we” are doing it), and “we” should actively seek to dismantle and destroy “Christian dogma”, and end any cultural influence anywhere else in the world… see the bias? “We” shouldn’t influence anyone else’s culture, in fact we should seek to undermine or destroy our own cultural norms because we are “evil”, meanwhile “they” can influence Western culture and it’s all good… ^_^
No not all of them. Not racists anyway. Most of them would have misconceptions on India and Hinduism that would soon be withered away through awareness and knowledge. The rest though, would be PC and intellectually dogmatic like you all.

What’s wrong with condemning the beliefs of approx. 3.6 billion people on the planet if its just their beliefs I am condemning and not actually them? SD and I have provided evidence of the evil their beliefs have caused. And I did say most Christians, Muslims, and Christian-biased Westerners but it is their beliefs that make them Christian/Muslim/etc. I am no problem with them as a person, but it is their ideology, which shapes them negatively in many cases, that needs to be reformed.

Find me the post where I agreed that America would become Hindu in that particular thread. You won’t find one. That is because I don’t agree and believe that America will become more secular and less religious (though still retaining some Christian biases). I didn’t take the time to post this though and instead made a facetious remark on whether the “U.S would survive this century without the rest of the world venting their anger at them in some form or fashion.” in other words, I was indirectly indicating that such a change was not possible. And don’t start thinking I am anti-U.S. It is a well known fact that the much of the world does not like the U.S.

Yes, you SHOULD stop spending missionaries and HELP end the NEGATIVE aspects of your influence in the rest of the world.

Did I say you should destroy your own culture? Again, find me the exact post. I said you should reform the negative aspects of it. And I never said you should let us influence your culture. That would be SD. I couldn’t care less whether you adopted our ways, so long as you learn to give MUTUAL RESPECT and not go around spreading misinformation on our culture and spreading propaganda. But that won’t happen until you reform yourselves. You should learn from the East/South East Asians; they adapted Buddhism and did an excellent job in creating their own versions of it. I daresay that even us Indians could not have done better than they have. Do I care? No. Why? Because most of them don’t go around defaming India and spreading propaganda against us. Best of all, they mostly MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS.

You know in physics speak, sometimes it is not the path taken that matters but the change. Like displacement. Or Enthalpy. Or gravitational potential energy. :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, when we get down to brass tacks, the “Evil West” is going to do whatever it wants. Why? Because we deserve it, considering the $Trillions$ & $Trillions$ of dollars that we’ve sent India to drag it out & keep it out of the gutter. Now that India is internationally recognized as a “developing country”, you’re all "Now get out! & completely change while you’re at it!"
Sorry, the real world doesn’t work like that. It never has. You like all the money we give you but you don’t like having us around? Pssht, grow the hell up.
Asians can look at the plethora of religions, philosophies, and belief systems available to them and they pick & choose like a salad bar. As Western countries have global social & financial influence, we will pick and choose from what religions or philosophies we like, when we like. We have the money, the power, and the authority, & we’ll do what we like. You can whine about it all you want but it’s a waste of time. Grow up & get with the real world.

Can I visit my universe yet paramatman guy? Is it done yet? I’m really excited to visit it.

Will you name it after ME? or YOURSELF or US. OR WEEEEEE?

The ParamatmaScales Way Centarui

Ah This is it. This is what I should call it.
The PSWC.

I like that better - its got a zip to it.

Will you make me lord of it? I’ll appoint Surya Deva my Ganesha.
He wants to be a god or sumthang. As long as I get to boss him around. Wouldn’t want to change things up when they are going so well now!

Surya Deva Ganesha! Make me a war for my amusement!!!

For I am kind.

Aha! This is exactly what I was hoping to uncover from you! Western bias and feelings of superiority! Thank you for proving for me what I always wanted to! Thank you for proving to me that you are RACIST and anti-Hindu/Indian, as SD and I always thought! Your Western world MADE India the “gutter” it was. And the reason India is now a developing country is because of its OWN efforts; your garbage aid (more like aid for supporting missionaries) did little to help us arrive at where we are. India even stopped receiving help for prolonged periods of time, even from the U.S, who, as always, stop helping other countries when they don’t sing with their tunes. Our brilliant PM’s were the ones that pulled us out of near bankruptcy. You can rejoice all you want in the suffering you caused in the world, but realize that the Western world is failing and the East in on the rise.

Is that so? You really think you can do what you want, when you want? Please regurgitate this for me in Saudi Arabia or Iran or Afghanistan. Please say this to the Chinese government. Scared? But you are a WESTERNER, and people will automatically obey you since you are supposedly more “civilized” than us and know more than us and have more power! The fact is, the Western world is progressively no longer able to dictate what it wants; the rest of the world is pulling ahead and will eventually regain its lost place in the world.

Grow up? More like “sink down.” I will never sink to the level of a Westerner with your biases and ignorance. It is you that needs to grow up, erase your biases and feelings of supremacy, and quit practicing Yoga. You do not need to taint our teachings and practices with your debilitating presence.

Did you see that post Thomas? I was right all along in placing Indra Deva on my “list!”

Hee haw.

So… you seem unable to grasp how “The West” is socially and financially dominant. It has nothing to do with my “feelings”. It’s simple observation. I’m not racist, but I’m glad that I had the karma to be born to a well-off & loving family in the United States, had the opportunity to travel the world & experience lots of different cultures & learn about their religions & philosophies.
Besides, I like Indian food too much & screwed too many Indian girls to hate them or where they come from. I DO KNOW that they moved the Hell away from India and aren’t one bit sorry about it. Now why is that???

Garbage aid? Trillions is “garbage”… & you think I’m a racist?
I’m starting to seriously think that you have a few screws loose. You do, don’t you? Do the nurses know you’re spending so much time on the internet?

Yeah, & then I’ll be on the forum complaining about you being a racist? Roll reversal? That’s your big fix? Yeah, you’re loopy.

You make your list all you want, just don’t let the nurses find it. They might take away your crayons…

Well, there is no doubt about it now Indra Deva is a racist. Probably a member of one of those local white nationalist movement. Now that you know his agenda, it is best to just ignore his racist comments. He’s lost a lot of respect with the sensible readers of this forum and many Hindus and Indians.

India does not need to be justified to a racist, Nietzche, you need to show some discrimination in who you respond to. Some people do not deserve any response at all. Respond to the good people on this forum, not to these trolls.

You make your list all you want, just don’t let the nurses find it. They might take away your crayons… :D
Actually, I can grasp that the West in socially and financially dominant. But that isn’t the point. The part we’re all debating is when you said the West can do what it wants, whenever it wants. That kind of thinking is not only wrong and supremacist/racist, but simply creates more evil and wrongdoing. Like colonialism. Imperialism. Etc.

You screwed Indian girls? Too many of them? You enjoyed it? Felt no regrets? And you claim to be further on the path of spirituality? And don’t Americans think of Indian girls as hairy and smelly (I for one hear this EVERY DAY from Americans themselves)?

I know exactly what you mean when you say they got the Hell out of India. India sucked back then. Hell, even I am saying that! Now it doesn’t suck as much, thanks to OUR efforts. With enough work and reform, it will become a progressively better place to live (have you EVER been to India? My family, for one, goes there EVERY summer). But what is the point in mentioning this? Usually, it is a tactic ignorant Americans use to make fun of India and Indians for what it is, always overlooking the fact that Westerners were responsible for the poverty and ignorance in India.

So what if you love Indian food? You can still be racist or not like Indians and Hinduism. For example, I personally love Persian/Arab/Mediterranean food, but I do not like Islam and the Muslims that subscribe to Islamic dogma (which includes scorn of kaffirs and heretical religions, over-sensitivity about Islam and Prophet Mohammed as evidenced by numerous death threats that are directed towards people that make fun of it…South Park for example).

It’s not the money that matters but to WHAT IT IS DIRECTED TOWARDS that matters. You think like a typical Westerner, only looking at the scale of things and not the motivations or other subtleties.

Lol, childish personal attacks. So typical…more proof that Yoga has failed to have any benefits for you. Yoga never has and never will help a Westerner like you (of which most of them are) attain ultimate realization.

Uhm, sorry for the typo. I meant to type “you all.” Everyone makes mistakes.

After that, your post degenerates into more childish personal attacks, comments not worthy of responding to.

And yes, SD is right. Responding to obvious bigots like you is a waste of time and effort.

One more thing. Find me and SD that anti-Jew post(s) we made, even though that thread in particular dealt with the scripture and not the people that subscribe to it. Calling us anti-Semitic is quite an accusation, considering the popularity of Jew jokes, antisemitism, and holocaust denial in America and the fact that I have repeatedly mentioned I have great respect for Jews and their accomplishments (seriously, without Jewish scientists and physicists…we wouldn’t be where we are today). I will be waiting patiently. Until then, we have nothing more to say to each other.

My Brother from another mother spreading some wisdom!

From T.K.V. Desikachar’s THE HEART OF YOGA:
“Krishnamacharya and Desikachar point out that yoga understanding developed in an ancient culture in which the notion of religion did not imply on social group against others, as it does today, causing much confusion among spiritual aspirants. Dharma or religion simply meant a virtuous way of life, and yoga was developed as a means of acknowledging or returning to the source of life. Because Krishnamacharya provided a context within which yoga can be practiced in conjunction with religious teachings, students have been able to deepen their understanding and appreciation of their chosen traditions. I have seen the lives of people who were already involved in a religious practice become much fuller and happier having taken on the practice of yoga. The personal application of an appropriate yoga results in changes that are consistent with the purposes of all religious traditions, including Christianity. It offers a practical means by which other teachings may be quickened and realized.
Of course, to practice yoga without reference to religion is also valid. The precise summary of yoga understanding provided by Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra does not require a belief in religious concepts such as God, nor does it deny such thinking. Specifically, the Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras concerns the attainment of a stable mind and healthy body so that personal goals may be achieved. Such attainment is quite independent of cultural background and religious inclination…”

“I have known many great teachers of many different traditions, and I have never felt strange in their presence. I think this is a tribute to my father’s teaching. I have never felt myself to be against somebody. I know these people are often at odds among themselves, but I have never felt so. I felt so peaceful in the great cathedrals in Paris, yet I am not a Christian. I was with J. Krishnamurthi. I was with U.G. Krishnamurthi. I have been with great theosophists, with great acaryas. I have friends who are devoted Muslims and others who are Christians. My own experience has taught me that my father’s teaching is universal; it helps us make sense of all religious traditions and spiritual points of view and practice. It helps us understand how everything fits and what is the right practice for us. I think this is the best testimony for yoga.”

Yeah, and what is exactly is your point?

This is Hinduism that Krishnamacharya is describiing. You do not have to believe in a concept such as god, nor is the concept denied. The aim is the attainment of stable mind and healthy body so that personal goals maybe achieived. To live a virtuous way of life and returning back to the source.

All these concepts Krishnamacharya is explaining are distinguishable Hindu doctrines. They are certainly not Christian, Islamic or Jewish doctrines.

What point (or lack of) are you attempting to convey? Still doesn’t refute the fact that Yoga is a part of Hinduism (which contains many aspects and philosophies, some religious, meaning pertaining to the organized religion Hinduism, and some not, meaning it pertains to the more general aspects of Hinduism and not the organized religion aspect).
Yeah, and what is exactly is your point?..
