Simon here from southern UK.
I am married with two young daughters, I am well travelled, and a dual citizen of UK and Australia, having lived in the latter for 7 years, I have spent extended time in India, Indonesia, New Zealand and North America and much of the rest of Asia during the 1990s and 2000s. I learned a lot during this time, From as far as I can remember I had quite a deep spiritual awareness and fascination, which in my late teens and early 20s subconsciously sent me to this places at a time when it wasn’t the done thing to just up sticks and go. I am very thankful to whatever power did that.
If I could change anything about my time travelling it would be to have more seriously considered the opportunities I had to learn and develop my Yoga practice when I was first on the road. Back then, at least in the world I came from Yoga, meditation, even vegetarianism was all written off as new age nonsense, so I was never had an inkling of what it was about.
I’ve been practising Yoga for a few years, but in the last year I have ramped it right up and am reaping the benefits mentally, physically and spiritually.
The good thing is now, that in my 30s and 40s I am well and truly on the path, the catalyst being quite a serious couple of bouts of depression which are thankfully over now after a few hard years of re-evaluation and adjustments. It was a painful journey but an interesting and valuable learning experience. I am happy and comfortable to share if it interests or might help anyone.
So my reason for joining up on here, I am year into my learning with a local school, I practise most days. With this new year I find I am needing to branch out a bit, the school I attend is excellent, but I do not want to get too ‘institutionalised’, and there are very few people I know locally who are on a similar wavelength with regards this fairly significant aspect of life and I hope to extend that on here.
I have one question, if anyone is able to help- I think I may have the opportunity in the next few months to take a week out of work and family life to attend a retreat, at this point it is not for sure, but I seek recommendations.
India is not out of the question, I haven’t been back since 2004 and I would love to. My first thoughts are either Varanasi or the Himalaya. In previous visits I loved - Varansi, Almora and Dharamsala particularly - though I haven’t been to Rishikesh, or possibly Kerala. Alternatively anywhere in the UK or Europe. Any answers gratefully received.
Thanks for having me
