We are all dying
YogiAdam,

“We learn from a very early age that we are all going to die”

That is only as an intellectual idea. For most, the reality has not really penetrated deep into one’s being, otherwise one would naturally be aware that the whole existence is impermanent.
Ok you’ve lost me now. It sounds like we are abandoning common sense and hoping on the cosmic hippy train. Of course a humans concept of death is an intellectual one. There is no other alternative. It’s a bit like saying that our awareness of paying taxes is an intellectual one, but the reality has not penetrated ones being. It makes no sense. There’s no need to complicate something that is painfully simple.

“Of course a humans concept of death is an intellectual one.”

That is fine, but it is not enough to come to terms with death. For that, all of your fear of it has to be transcended completely, and that fear is functioning deep down in the uncosncious. And because most are living in great fear of death, that prevents oneself from not only coming to terms with the reality, but from coming to an undertanding of what death is. To intellectually understand that you are going to die is one thing, and to come to terms with the reality, to be at peace with it, is something else entirely. And one may think that one has already come to terms with it just as one may be thinking and assuming all kinds of things in one’s mind, but when the time arrives, it is a totally different matter.

Either you can do the work that is needed now, transcend the fear and come to a contentment with the reality, surrender to the inevitable completely, or postpone the matter until perhaps when you are preparing to enter into the grave, but by that time it is often too late.

YogiAdam,

“It sounds like we are abandoning common sense”

What is needed is not common sense, what is needed is uncommon clarity. Because you have not investigated deep enough into the matter, you have already assumed all kinds of things, both about yourself and about death.

Wow! You certainly have developed a real knack for complicating life. My brain would explode from anxiety if I started thinking that way. I’m happy to call a spade a spade and keep things super simple. To think that there is some kind of ‘work’ to be done, in regards to our attitude towards death… now that is just completely insane!!! No offense, but It sounds like you may very well have too much time on your hands… I can only echo my first point and suggest that if we invest too much energy thinking about death, we could be missing out on life.
