The AUM is a Social Meditation that combines movement, role playing and vocal expression.
AUM stands for awareness, understanding and meditation. It is one of the basic and most powerful techniques used at the Humaniversity.
By participating in the AUM you can experience a deep sense of aliveness, warmth, relaxation and acquire a taste for life again!
Philosophically speaking since it represents everything. I feel it can’t have any meaning.
Meaning operates always from the mind perspective and tries to chategorize or define things and experiences. So the “Om Sign” points to something which when realizing it can’t have any meaning it all.
I’ve read a great deal of this thread, and my mind is swimming with thoughts and arguments.
I see in this thread what I see in myself and so many of my peers; a strong desire to classify our world into tidy absolute definitions that give us some semblance of order. I am so utterly weary of hearing the indoctrinated and the religious apologists try to justify their beliefs by bringing down other peoples beliefs (especially pluralist beliefs, Lord forbid if an individual tries to construct a global reality based on multiple belief systems (…belief systems which at their core address precisely the same moral and ethical dilemma’s which mankind has faced for ages.).).
I am no scholar of Hinduism, but from what I understood from the Wikipedia article, Aum is the vibration connected with the creation of the universe. Regardless of how you interpret it, the universe happened, and you are here now.
“Yoga forum” is a misnomer. Something that is to be experienced and self-realized cannot be discussed. We can discuss the process, the variables and input, to some extent. But, discussing the meaning and the result/ outcome is an open invitation to word-play and ‘six blind men’ syndrome. Ambition to win the game, makes it worse.
But until the enlightenment, we ARE ‘six blind men’ and have got to debate.
In my view, AUM does not have any (specific) meaning, because it is a sound, and not a word. Moreover it is a basic human sound and primordial. This has a special significance in Yoga framework. The five basic elements, the five senses and sense organs, the five sheaths that compose a being and three gunas, form a gross (physical) to subtle (spiritual) hierarchy in the Universe. This hierarchy, we are told, continuously expands when gross manifests from the subtle and continuously contracts when gross merges back into the subtle.
Thus, akash first manifests from the Universal Mind and then fire, air, water and earth emerge in succession making infinite objects through their permutations. Sense associated with akash is sound and it is understandable that when akash is born, it is with the most basic sound of AUM. But, sound is what is sensed, in reality it is a vibration.
This vibration is at an extremely high frequency that any grosser substance can’t sustain it. This gives AUM its manifold interpretations. Some prefer to recite it aloud with full force, while some prefer to listen to it intently, emanating from each atom of our body. Some prefer a repeated chanting, while some make that a silent target of deep meditation. And, I guess each one is valid in a way, such is the potency of AUM.
Aum or OM is the cosmic vibration of the universe. Everything in creation resonates with this cosmic vibration. Some say, it is the sound of god.
Amen evolved from the word Aum…and that is the truth, so there is a connection to the words.
