Yoga and meditation

I dont know about Buddhism, but its true that , liberation is something much higher than any thing even enlightenment. But liberation is achieved after enlightenment.

That’s what the Indian philosophy says, but I’m not sure that I agree. Seeking liberation can sometimes seem selfish, pessimistic, and escapist. On the other hand, seeking enlightenment is often selfless, optimistic, and beneficial for the world.

Thanks Asuri for explaining the three paths of yoga. I was bit confused about that, and you relieved me. And thanks for differentiating between liberation and enlightenment. What you told is absolutely right, liberation is something selfish and enlightenment is selfless. But is it not true that liberation is achieved only after enlightenment.

Perhaps for the enlightened person the motivation for liberation is different than what is apparent to the unenlightened.

Or perhaps liberation is not something that we seek, but something that happens to us when the purpose for our existence has been realized.

Very true Asuri, that liberation is not something that we seek. But when we come to realize our purpose of existence, liberation is achieved, which we had never thought of. So main purpose of our life should be to realize purpose of our existence either than seeking for liberation. Once we realize purpose of our existence, all other paths are open for us.

Seriously, why seek liberation? Patanjali said …to the seer, all is suffering. To one who experiences all material existence as suffering, liberation is the only means of eliminating that suffering. But how many of us experience life as only suffering?

The sages taught that the purpose of existence is to realize our own true nature. It is one thing to understand this at an intellectual level, but another thing to experience it directly. It seems to me that this is a self-centered approach to meditation.

Another approach is object-centered. I believe that this is the basis for all knowledge and scientific discovery. This type of approach results in incremental insights that, little by little, reduce the suffering that we experience in life, and not just for ourselves but for everyone. I’m talking about advances in technology, medicine, and the like. Is this not enlightenment?

The recipients capacity cannot be held decisive about the real nature or size of it’s content.

The teaching of suffering culminated in Buddha’s teaching. That was 500 years before Christ. Since Christ, the teaching of suffering is of relative truth. Not becaue it is not true. It is, yet, it is transcended by hope. And if one pays attention, this hope has been present throughout the last 2000 years. Indeed, no longer to be human is but sorrow. The Human Ideal has been made manifest. Human condition is miserable, no matter how civilized we became. But civilization also means culture, and culture is spiritualization of existence. Beside the misery of his life as a flesh and bone being, the human genius has been working and expressing itself as Mozart, or Goethe, as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Einstein, or even Marx and Freud. The possibility to pursue and express our highest ideals through creative activity, is something alien to the ancient eastern mind. And according to the teaching I recieved, and what could be only expressed through several pages, not because it is that complex, but because a long process of growth cannot be explained without the description of it’s memorable stations, all this would not happen at all without the deed of Chrits on mount Golgotha.

This is not about chosing a religion or tradition. We all did that before our birth. But we also need to transcend it. Christianity as organized religion is the shadow of the real thing. It is not working through it’s scriptures or churches alone. It works through the supersensible Presence what has been called the Holy Ghost - a distortion, as the concept of Spirit as the divine spark in humans and everything in the world has been banned from christian theology. Indeed, christian theology suffers today from the general materialism of our minds, and it was actually it’s precursor, it’s birthbed.

Anyway, a few thoughts to see things in hystorical perspective and not those grim shades of escapist teachings. There is more to life than the suffering of human condition. Ye are gods, it is said. Indeed, we are gods, in that we are left to use divine creative powers. Who says a symphony of Beethoven is not divine ? Or Luciano Pavarotti was not unique and marvelous ? In spite of our misery, we are able to become great, to create and become ever greater. Dedication, love, sacrifice, to nurture and use well our talents. We are here to work. Not as labourers, but as co-creators. Nothing of real value is ever lost. All perfect moments are recorded. Yes … it is not necessary to be famous. Your own perfect moments you created in your life, are part of creation … and gifts you take with you the heavenly realms.

Did you mean, hysterical?

I can see your point that things like music and art are also examples of the objective type of meditation. But you are wrong to think that this creative and hopeful force did not exist before the Christian era. Otherwise, man would never have stood on two legs. And you are wrong to post comments that are likely to anger and offend many visitors to this forum. Take another look at the original post:

Is ths not a positive and hopeful message? I believe that the teachings of yoga are much more sophisticated than you think they are.
