108 mala

hi,

are any of you doing 108 surya namaskaras (sun salutations) today? (dec.21)

i have attempted it on previous solstices, but after about 20 or so stopped. also i find it hard to keep count.

i am going to do it now.

hope to read your reactions.

happy yoga!
wim

just finished doing 108 sun salutations.
it took me over an hour and it was harder than i thought, after the first 54 i was going to give up.
but given my commitment here i kept going and it was actually easier later on.
i can feel it in my shoulders.

i recommend you try it if you haven’t.

Hi, wim! What a commitment! Thanks for sharing.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the relevance of doing 108 on the solstice? What is the background?

thank you marahatna, i am not the only one here doing that am i?

no problem byrd62au, someone had to ask. thanks for that.

we do it to express gratitude to the sun, giver of life.

108 has been a special number for yogi’s since a long time and there are many reasons,

i like this scientific reason, since the yoga of postures is called hatha yoga and hatha means sun & moon, i found it on wikipedia;

the diameter of the Sun is nearly 108 times the diameter of the Earth, the distance from the Sun to the Earth is nearly 108 times the diameter of the Sun, and the average distance of the Moon from the Earth is nearly 108 times the diameter of the Moon

as i said there are many reasons, i am sure you’ll look it up.

Cool. cheers Wim. Since I have done so far no sun salutations I am inspired by your effort to do at least 12 when I get home from work!

Yesterday was summer solstice here in South Africa and our yoga class did 108 sun salutes. The first 27 are the most difficult, after that the moving meditation becomes lovely and if you are dedicating you salutes to others it becomes even more meaningful. It is also really good to do them with others as the energy from other people seems to enspire one.

nice to hear loretha.

i agree with you about the first 27 or so being the hardest, i was also distracted often at first.

that makes a lot of sense to me what you are saying about being inspired by other practitioners.

i am looking forward to do the next one with other yogi’s.

i believe there are 4 in a year, so the next one would be at the end of march?

how did it go for you byrd62au?

by the way, sorry for spelling your name wrong maranatha

wim

no worries, wim. “Maranatha”, my signature, is an old language invitation in my non-yoga culture (Judeo-Christian). My handle here on the forums is “Techne”, from the Greek root word we see in ‘technique’ and ‘technology’.

The one at the end of March is actually an equinox, as is the one in September.
