Absent mind

hai, i’m having a problem of absend minded/day dreaming. i can’t able to concentrate during conversation with friend and others or when listening to programme on tv and radio. my mind easily stray away even when i try to control and give my attention. because of this i cant get full information and sometime i asked them to repeat what they’ve said. i was born on 11th and it’s told in numerology that most people born on 2,11,20 and 29 which bring total 1+1=2,2+0=2 and 2+9=11=2 will have dis things. i’m not sure how far it’s true. but is there any way i can solve my problem trough yoga pose, meditation or any other solution. please advice me. thank you.

Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating a healthy diet? Are you practicing any asana? What sort of exercise do you get? All of these things can affect your ability to concentrate.
Have you just begun experiencing some new stresses in your life? Stress can also cause this. There are many things, and it is best to look closer to home than to begin looking to the stars and numerology.

hai, thanks for reply. as wat u say food diet is important and i’m vegetarian…n follow diet correctly. i sleep 6 -7 hrs daily and doing yoga almost every day since 2 years back. i agree that stress can cause it also. absent mindedness is the state of often forget things and not paying attention to what things happen near them becoz they thinking abt other thing or day dreaming. dis was happening to me quite long time ago when i’s studying, not working yet. i knew numerology n astrology got certain effect but we can overcome it through certain practice like yoga. what i realy want to know is any asanas that can overcome it. thank you again

Hi Selvan,

Asanas promote balance in the whole person, including the mind. What you want to focus on during your practice is your breath and staying absolutely present with each pose. This effort at focusing alone might help you to better control your mind. It is called dharana in Sanskrit and is the 6th limb of the 8 ashtanga limbs Patanjali describes. Do you understand what I mean by these 8 limbs?

A meditation you can practice that helps is to focus on your breath.

Another is to stare at a candle flame, not taking your eyes away and not letting your mind get carried away by thought.

Some excellent advice from Sparky which i agree with fully.

You may also benefit from a strong dynamic yoga practice such as ashtanga, as this will challenge you to focus on ‘getting through’ the postures, and challenge you in a physical way which may be more manageable for you at present.

And one of the side effects of this practice, is that it will also gradually tame and channel you mind into being ‘in the present’ and focusing on your breath.

Similar to what Sparky was talking about… except this is a more dynamic physical way to 'harness… or ‘capture’ the mind.

Best Wishes,
Dave

hai sparky,
thanks fr ur reply. i can try the focusing candle way. i believe it will work out. and u mentioned abt d ashtanga yoga 8 limbs. i surf through website looking for it n found that de defects in 1st four limbs are correctible but defects in last four limbs are not n potentially dangerous to mind. now i began to aware. i’ve done asanas and breathing practice with my yoga instructor n alone. but about meditation, i’s doing it alone mostly without any guidance n sometime i’s doing it when my mind is disturbed. i’m not sure wether if i’ve done it in correct way or not. i’m worrying if my mind already disturbed in case if i’ve done it incorrectly. at least now i aware i shouldnt do meditation alone. is it true that it’s incorrectible? or there is still ways to correct it? thank u

Bottom line the Planets and stars are influential.

But whos the masta?

SHO NUF!

Ummm. What were we talking about ?

OH YEAH concentration.

“Mindfulness” and “Calm abiding.” - From the Buddhist Systems. I would look into those topics . . . in your library in your bookstore and online as they deal with the things of which you spoke.

Hi Selvan,
One piece of advice is practice practice practice…

practice physical asana, cleaning practices (the 6 shatkarmas) diligently each day.

This is much better than ‘reading about it’ which is the trap that many westerners make about the whole trans-formative practice of yoga and meditation.

Instead of getting onto one’s mat or meditation cushion to do one’s practice, one can spend hours and hours reading and churning up the mind, instead of doing the practice which in time will harness and calm the mind.

Best Wishes,
Dave

Hi Burren,
thanks for ur clear advice…i agree its better to try out n practice rather than worrying out so many things. thank you
