Hi ndrew,
It begs the question:-
What exactly were you doing or could have been doing with respect to practices?
Yoga is a science of cause & effect. You do this and you get that . And it’s usually predicatable if you know what you’re doing, i’e have a bit of knowledge though not always and frequently healthy. There are levers and swtiches in the nervous system.Sometimes they go on automatically because the circuits connect, often through the use of internal manouvres. The chances of doing this without yoga/meditation using the techniques would have to be rare i would say.
When you speak of fire you could be referring to agni, which is digestive fire in the belly and manipura chakra region. Powerful techniques like uudiyana bhanda or combinations of techniques which are unlikely to be appllied together without being involved in progressive sadhana of some sort, i.e postures, breathing and/or meditation could cause this. You may experience a surge of energy as a result of prana moving up the main channel, sushumna nadi…Since you refer to martial arts and a buddhist practice i would be inclined to speculate about what techniques they use however the odds are what they use is the same and the human nervous system is inter connected just like all of yoga…the prominent levers and dials will be the same.Mudras and bhandas may cause premature purification in an insufficently purified subtle nervous system. What can occur is Kundalini the potential energy force will rise but then go back to sleep. This i have heard common if it has not gone much beyond manpiura or belly chakra region.Once the belly chakra is awakenend whatever you do, the techniques tend to become more powerful. It is possible to awaken sushumna but prematurely because you don’t know what you’re doing and you’ve gone into an automatic pilot-mode. Automatic kriyas can occur. The prana can be experienced as mere tingles through individual nadis or surges or jolts even as it meets friction as it moves through bigger channels. You might feel slightly drunk or out of it.But it is usually very pleasant. It can be felt often like an orgasm or like you’ve had a few glasses of red wine… and you may forget your body for a sec while it occurs…You get a release of energy. If you do this too quickly which is the danger then the prana can retreat usualy back down sushumna and leave your nervous system rather disorientated and it can take a long time to recover from it.It can even lead to a type of psychosis especially if you’ve had past drug history or trauma perhaps of one kind or another. At least some of the literature seems to want to suggest that.
What you describe is real to you so that is all that matters.
PREMATURE kUNDALINI AWAKENING(PKA) is/are to be avoided at all costs. Not to be too alarmist about it. So there is a principle that could get more of a mention in some systems of yoga called “self-pacing”.Some systems might put the emphasis on foolowing the moral codes yamas & niyamas pure body & mind etc so Kundalini arises naturally and in it’s own time. It should never be forced.Forcing and working within too short a time-scales is usually the cause behind PKA i have come to believe.Kundali, is like a bud that is going to open some day into a flower…or a child you take special delicate care of. You add a little bit of water each day, you nourish it, take care of it and it will open in it’s own time but it won’t open if you force it.
So it begs the question what exactly do you think you might have been doing practice-wise. It would help if you were a bit more specific… Overly zealous pranayama, or a meditation technique or an overly zealous practice within too short a time-scale are often primary causes i am led to believe.
There is nothing to fear. You just let go. And avoid putting any toxins in your system as this can block the channels too.Best advice if this is the case is to take it easy & rest.Crown activiy is a big give-away often. extreme cases feel like a swarm of activty at the crown-,ie fontanelle region(and third-eye). This usually means it is reconfiguring itself and the sushumna may have undergone an opening. What can happen in the worst of cases is you get a sushumna awakening albeit temporarily as a result of balancing ida and pingala ,the two other main channels relating to either sides of the body and then K what i suspect it does is it retreats back down shushumna nadi the main central channel and you may as result experience an over-active pingal or ida, i.e left & right chanels. It is generally thought that K will only rise when ida and pingal corrresponding to left & right chaneels or sides of the body are adequtely harmonised and in adequate balance. But this as i say in the premature case may only be temporary and the effect of ths is too disorientate the nervous system. K is not so mysterious once you understand it better from a scientific point of view. And science does understand it somehwat, the dynamics etc.It can take time to configure the nervous system after such an event but a kundalin yoga teacher or an experenced yoga teacher, or guru that can prescribe for you apporpriate tools for such a maladjustment or misfortune would be your best bet. You can alternatively try to learn yourself but it can take a long time. Learning how to meditate wuld be your first ally in the event this happened to any practitoner. It happened to me so i feel i can relate from experience. There are grades and different kinds of imbaances that can occur. But it’s usually either a result of forcing and/or too short a time-scales, i.e not self-pacing or not really knowing what you’re doing combined perhaps often with a phenomenon that has been called automatic yoga. This phenomenon occurs when the nervous system automatically goes into automatic kriyas, bhandas etc unconsciously and you go with it. So in this instance you keep an eye out for that kind of behaviour and pace your openings.Make the journey to complete transformation easy, not difficult.Kundalin awakes in it’s own time. It should’nt be forced. How do we know when we are forcing or backing off?. Well if we are invovled in progressive sadhana it can be quite a fine line, a razor’s edge even. We just back off if we are unsure and pace our practices and our routine.
I could not say definititively if this summarises your particular situation or scenario but if you are involved in progressive sadhana then i hope you find these notes helpful. The data on PMK may not be huge because these things can be tricky to deal with for any aspirant. I do hear a number of anecodotal reports of friends of friends/practitioners ending up in loony bins. There really should be more info. You best bet is to famiilarise yourself with the full range of techniques in the yogic sciences if this is the case or seek out a tantric yoga teacher or someone that practices the full breadth of yoga,asana/postures, pranayam, meditation techniques and other esoteric stuff.Meditation is your greatest ally.If things were really bad you could start off using a global purifier like deep meditation(see aypste.org)followed by their spinal breathing may help matters too and then if this did not work completely then move towards learning how to balance the third-eye.But there is nothing to worry about. In time it will sort itself out if this is the case here.Hey you end learning more about yoga and delviing more deeply as a result. You can become a bit more wiser as a result.Patience is the key in this kind of a scenario and a decent enough handle and knowledge of all the techniques within the yogic sciences.
