Alternate breathing

Hi.

Alternating breath is mentioned in Swara Yoga. It says “If you ever take time to observe the breath and the manner in which the air flows in and out of the nostrils, you will notice that most of time respiration takes place through one nostril only. It appears that respiration occurs through both nostrils simultaneously, but this is not so”. It went on saying that one nostril will close (by itself) and the alternative nostril open.

How true is this description? In western anatomy, medicine, etc this seems to be impossible. Unless one closes one nostril with his/her fingers, othewise the body structure and its operation will not close or open the nostril by itself.

What are your views?

Thanks and regards?

It is true that the air flows through each nostril at varying volumes. An excellent book on this subject and on the breath/pranayama is Science of Breath by Swami Rama of the Himalayan International Institute. “Controlling the breath, is a prerequisite to controlling the mind and the body.”

There are mucous membranes in the nostrils which swell and slow the rate of air flow drawn through each nostril. I have read that there is a regular rhythm to the change in nostril predominance (90 minutes?). It is possible to observe for yourself which nostril is drawing a larger volume of air with practice and attention. Try it for yourself!

Namaste Chandra!
I have concentrated on my breath and understood that it is really true.Is there any website links for explaining this same concept of "Science of Breath by Swami Rama "

Thanks in advance…
