I recently had an ovarian cyst removal via laparoscopic surgery. Although it has only been 2 days, it has left my stomach very swollen. Are there any asana that you can recommend that can help with this swelling?
Swelling is a response by the immune system. It does not abate through the practice of asana.
Since you’ve had a medical procedure and that procedure is so recent, it is best to directly contact the health care professional you chose. In this way you can get feedback appropriate to you, the procedure, and returning to health. Once you’re cleared by your surgeon then an asana practice can be resumed.
Thanks Gordon. I just thought that I have used my physical practice to help when I have a cold, a headache , pms etc that perhaps there was a way to use asana to help with the swelling.
Perhaps I can use this time to simply practice patience.
Regards,
If you are familiar with Shant Sarovarasana you can do that “pose” which calms the lake of the belly. If you are not, don’t both with the google search. It is futile.
Gentle pranayama in the supine pranayama position would be fine.
technical glitch. Double posted.
Who would know this pose???
“Shant Sarovarasana”
It is not in Light on Yoga???
Any certified Purna Yoga? teacher (2,000-hour trained), Jehangir and Aadil Palkhivala and perhaps their mother, and some others unbeknownst to me.
The best thing you can do for your healing process, after a surgery like this, is to just relax. Watch the swelling for redness, which could be an indication of infection or a complications…but most importantly, practice patience with yourself. Deep breathing and focused meditation, with positive affirmations of healing, will be most beneficial.
Also, turmeric is an excellent anti-inflammatory that can be applied topically and internally. Ginger is another powerful plant that is actually highly recommended for female reproductive health, especially the ovaries. Vitamin C, Zinc (do not exceed 100 mg a day), Bromelain, Garlic, Bilberry, Echinacea, and Goldenseal (not to be taken for a prolonged period) are all very beneficial for reducing inflammation and aiding the healing process. A hot sitz bath is particularly helpful for painful ovarian conditions and can reduce swelling in the abdominal area…but please check with your physician first to ensure your safety and well-being.
As for a beneficial pose, one recommendation would be “cat-cow”
Benefits:
Stretches the back torso and neck
Provides a gentle massage to the spine and belly organs
This will help to gently build abdominal strength, as well as relax you and keep your body moving. It’s a simple pose sequence that is easily accessible through a quick google search. : )
Be gentle with yourself. It’s only been a few days…give your body time to heal from the trauma of surgery. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water…and get lots of rest.
Hope this helps. Wishing you a rapid recovery! Best wishes…
~ and I would love to hear about your progress, too : )
I went through some similiar abdominal swelling recently and found that taking it very, very easy, especially with any twists is the best approach. Also, plenty of Kombucha tea seemed to help as well.
