ASHVINI-MUDRA safety

Hello everybody,

i am not into yoga but i am trying to improve myself, i want to heal myself and learn to ground.

Grounding has always been my biggest problem and i am verry weak in the lower 3 chakras.

i am aware of the connection between the root and the rectum and today when i felt really ungrounded i had the idea of contracting and decontracting the rectum region-muscles ( 1sec up 1 sec down)

I did this for 1 minute and i felt grounded instantly!
I was doing this in the train and when i got of i felt great about myself and strong in my body

Of course now that i found this i want to do it daily but i went on the net and saw this was a mudra in kundalini yoga…

So i am wondering if this practice is safe for me to do or will it activate my kundalini?

I dont want to mess up my system so i am a bit afraid, also i feel the heat in my body allready,

It is very difficult to answer your question with the information you have given about yourself. What is your age, health condition, and what yoga practices do you follow? Are you in general very sensitive to yoga practices? What is your intent, other than healing and grouding? In other words, where do you come from and where would you like to go?

If you are interested in yoga, you could join a hatha yoga class. There are many teachers and types of yoga available in your country. Many of the standing asanas and simple abdominal breathing can be very grounding. Going to class is probably a better approach than selecting one technique (such as aswini mudra) from the whole array of available yoga techniques.

I wouldn’t worry to much about one minute of ashwini mudra. To wake up muladhara chakra, Motoyama recommends mulabandha (50x) followed by one hour of chanting Om while concentrating on ajna chakra. Your one minute practice pales by comparison. But then again, you could be very sensitive. In general, when practicing yoga, it is good to be aware of the responses of your bodymind, but not to pass judgement on what happens. If fear arises, let go of this as well. You can learn this in a yoga class, too.
