Right, can anyone advise how I can work out a practice which will help me with back pain AND enable me to continue a weight loss programme?

Pain in lower back!
If you can walk , try to walk 1 hour per day.
first give importance to back pain. you can avoid forward bending and loading your back while doing anything related to abs excercises.
weightloss will happen when you practice yoga in anyways. for weightloss, first fix your lifestyle. Your weight gain and back pain may be traced back to your lifestyle. proper diet will add better results.

If I understand the phrasing of your question you are asking how you can do something using Yoga to alleviate lower back pain but not prevent you from a weight loss program you are already involved in.
Or are you perhaps asking if there is a Yoga program that will BOTH alleviate back pain AND help you to lose weight in the process???
