Becoming my true self

Hello all,

I am new to yoga. There are many reasons why I want to practice yoga, two of those being self-confidence and becoming grounded and in touch with who I really am. I searching for a way to quiet my mind, trust my decisions and become comfortable standing in my own power.

Is there a particular style of yoga that can help with this? I would greatly appreciate any information you may have for me. Thank you for your time.

Consider reading Swami Vivekananda?s book “Raja Yoga” which is in line with the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, an effort to create a favorable and fertile body/mind/energy environment for inquiry into ?Who Am I?. Then you may want to follow up with Vedanta in the lineage of Adi Shankara, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta Maharaj etc. since your words (?Becoming my true self?, ?in touch with who I really am?) suggest an innate desire for this path.

Great. Thank you for the recommendation. Also,in general what would be the best yoga to start with for a pure beginner?

Your yoga has already started with your seeking to know. Please don’t get into the style yet, until you read Vivekanada’s book (as Ray recommends). That will till your mind enough to know that a style is only a tool. Even when you learn one later, you will remember that its a means not an end by itself.

At the heart of real yoga is a “change within”. No style, no book, no outside knowledge/ authority would help; only your own absorption of wisdom and its internalized expression through behavior will make the change happen. That alone shall be your truth; that alone will be end-of-night.

I understand what you mean, but I am not really sure where to go from here. I do not know any poses. Should I start with Mountain, downward dog, wood chopper?

When you say yoga I think you mean asana (the physical postures, routines), two popular yoga asana practices would be Iyengar or Ashtanga Vinyasa; you could try your local studio or video that best suits you, trial and error everyone has a different disposition.

My apologies. I am brand new to yoga and asana. Thank you for your help.
