Hello everybody. I am an amateur when it comes to Yoga. I have attempted to do it before in the past, but I haven’t had much luck. I am looking for some assistance. I’m 18, and I weigh about 115LB. I tend to sit around quite often for long periods of time, and I really don’t exercise too much. I would like to ask you guys to help me find some good Yoga exercises that I can do upon waking up in the morning or perhaps even during the day, so I can feel refreshed and not have to feel so lazy. I know that sitting around all day is absolutely detrimental to my health, so that is why I am looking to make a huge change in my life and start learning yoga because I heard it has great health benefits and reduces stress and overall is very beneficial. Please tell me what I can start off doing. What exercises should I learn? Any good Youtube links you can offer me? Any tips that I should remember before hand? Also, I heard Yoga is also great for flattening your stomach. I have a little stomach fat that I wish to eliminate. I have looked up Yoga exercises on Youtube that seem really helpful but they are not very detailed. They are only 2 minute long videos and they dont tell you how many times to do the exercise and how many times a day to do it,etc. I just dont know… I just really would like to change my life around and start engaging in more healthier activity’s. and I believe yoga is the best way to start. I’d like to learn from home before taking classes so I can feel comfortable. I just don’t know where to start. Thank you everyone!
MatrixGravity,
From your narration one can speculate that you are free of any physical constraints and only weighed down by laziness. Inertia, in Yoga terms, is hallmark of engrossment in the physical body and the material pursuits.
I guess you need to first target your adrenalin and make it run. YouTube is a wrong place to learn Yoga. You can join a gym that teaches both Yoga and conventional muscle training. Under proper guidance you should do it on alternate days. In Yoga, you may start with Sun Salutations (starting with 4, taking to 12 over six months) and basic set of stretching postures.
At the end of six months, you should develop good insight wether Yoga is for you. If you would still be concerned about your body to “show”, stick with muscle-training. Wait until you realize that a beautiful body makes you aware of a balance between what is outside and what is within. When you are ready Yoga will take you on a wonderful journey within. But, first get up and get going.

First, congratulations you want to do something, and turn things around.
I was also learning from home before attending classes with DVD and a book… but it got annoying to move the furniture, the ringing phone, the cat walking over my mat… etc.
If that’s an option, maybe join some beginner courses? The instructor will be able to correct you, and you will be more concentrated as when you practice at home, and a group setting maybe also easier to get you motivated then doing yoga on your own alone.
Let us know what your next steps are!
