i dont have money for yoga classes. i downloaded a few yoga apps on my phone and have started doing a yoga practice. right now just sun salutation. the app doesnt show how to really do the poses. so my question is what should i do to really get into yoga practice. is there a good website to learn the practices. i do my yoga in the morning before school i meditate right after my yoga session but i have read that you should meditate before yoga is that true? any advice would help a bunch as i really want to get a good home practise started.
Welcome flagrl and congrats on your commitment to yoga and meditation. This forum hold a wealth of information and some very knowledgeable people. Whether you are interested in yoga as asana or the more spiritual side of yoga, you’ll find good info here.
To answer your question, below is a website that is wonderful and free.
http://www.doyogawithme.com/
(BTW, DoYogaWithMe is one of the contributors here at the yogaforums)
You can also check the yoga journal and browse the pose index for a pretty decent explanation along with benefits, contraindications, etc.
There are many schools of thought regarding when to meditate. Some prefer before practice (for most though it is difficult to immediately calm the mind) and others after. I know from asking my students, they get much more out of meditation after our asana practice. But do what feels right for you and when time permits.
And if you can afford it, a good book to reference is invaluable. The American Yoga Association Beginners Guide, and Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha are 2 I would recommend.
I hope this has been of some help to you.
thank you i will look at that website and i will try to get a book or 2, who knows xmas is comming up and i will put them on my list
Could you be more specific on the topic of “I don’t have money”, since that has become a very common response relative to proper study?
It means I am broke so I can’t afford to pay for classes that is why I am in here looking for help
Good for you for trying yoga!
I’ve not tried this myself but I’ve heard good things about yogatoday.com and it looks like they offer introductory/beginner level and one free class per week. Perhaps wait until they give an introductory class for free again (they had one last week) to try it.
I like Yogadownload.com. It has tons of free 20 minute downloads and it looks like their Beginner Yoga session has good reviews saying it’s good for a true beginner. It’s audio but you also download a really well done pose guide with the pictures of the asanas (poses) you do in the practice. You can also download these free practices & pose guides through iTunes. You can put them right on your phone.
I’d suggest checking out your library for instructional books and beginner dvds. Look for Yoga Zone dvds, libraries tend to have them and they are great for beginners.
Enjoy discovering yoga!
Look for community or donation classes in your area.
Also approach yoga studios about an exchange of your skills for yoga classes…can you help out with cleaning/receptionist duties/data base or mailing list management etc…
At our studio we are giving yoga classes to a woman who is helping with English teaching to our staff .
…worth a try.

If you live around Calgary Alberta I could use your help right now!
In Indian mythology, there is a very interesting story of Ekalavya. He came from a poor family and couldn’t afford to attend a school meant for the elites. Those days options were very limited. So, he created a mud-statue of a famous teacher and started learning in the privacy of his home. He achieved the same proficiency as those in the school.
More than money, or a vague dream of a better body, you need devotion, commitment and clarity of what to seek. If you have that in abundance, look no farther. Whatever little help that you get from anywhere, first get going. Well equipped studios and celebrity teachers don’t necessarily make a Yogi. Your teacher will arrive when you reach the limits of what you can do on your own. Trust.
