Beginner Yogi with a few questions :)

Hi, I’m new to yoga I actually haven’t even started yet. I’m looking for a style that fits me, but I just had a few questions first.

  1. Will any type of yoga help me tone my body? I used to be kinda skinny but have gained quite a bit of weight and would like to shed that weight and have that Brad Pitt in Fight Club look. What style will help me?

  2. Can I do the same routine every time? Is it important for me to change up the routine every time I do it?

  3. Can I do yoga to complement any other type of workout that I may currently be doing?

Thanks for any help regarding these questions!

an excellent starting point is yogajournal.com. They have a whole beginners section! I started there and with one yoga video and since my practice has expanded immensely! To answer your questions, yes, any type of yoga will help tone. There are an infinite number of vinyasas (routines) so why not explore more than just one? And yes, yoga is an excellent complement to any other exercise routine. Yogajournal and yogatoday.com show some specific vinyasas to help with your other types of physical activity, so check em out! And have a great time! Welcome to yoga  Namaste!

To get the Brad Pitt look in Fight Club, you need more than just yoga and many hours in the gym and a few kilogrammes of weights.

But to answer your questions: The style is up to you and also what is avaliable in your area. Yoga will help you to tone your body, but yoga also asks for patience as it is a slow process and not the fast-food-type-of-gym results orientated.

To do the same routine is so boring seeing that yoga really offers so much. Doing the same routine gives the body access to a limited range of asanas and there are so many variations on asanas and asanas which will help to tone and develop your body. Try to vary the routine it might ward off getting bored with your yoga.

What other workouts do you do that you want to know about?

Good luck and hope you’ll find that yoga that will work for you.

Yeah. Six pack abs and that type of muscle tone don’t come just from yoga. Learning proper dietary guidelines paired with an exercise routine that includes weights and cardios is the path. Hope that helps.

Commander Bond,

I would encourage you to examine your motives or intention for pursuing Yoga. Why? The three things you mention seem to indicate a perception that yoga is a fitness regimen. Yoga is not a fitness routine nor is it a “workout”. However it can have those qualities when Yoga is defined as asana. But even asana is not a fitness routine, per se.

People come to yoga practice for many reasons (including “fitness”) and it’s perfectly fine. It is however very useful to have a level of clarity about why you are choosing Yoga - in this case instead of functional strength training which would serve your stated purposes much more efficiently.

Shed weight, there are certain postures that specifically speed up the metabolism and aid in digestion which will help to relieve constipation. So while doing a certain amount of cardio may burn more calories, some yoga poses may burn less but help you loose more weight because your bodily functions bestter. IA, Pandara, nichole, etc… please correct me if I am mistaken. As far as looking like Mr. pitt, hair dye and a makeup artists may bring fastest results. Good luck brother, yoga is pretty cool
