I recently posted on a flooring forum and they directed me here for further thoughts. I am currently researching what would be the best flooring for a hot yoga studio. Has anyone here ever started or been a part of a hot yoga studio? If so, what type of flooring did you use and would you use it again if given the choice?
Ive been to one bickram place. Their floor is kinda plastic sponge. Perspirations sink under that sponge and never get out… it stinks. In addition when plastic gets heated it stinks too.
I would think something like granite floor would be an easy to clean. or some sort of removable surface over the concrete floor… something like in the martial art studios…
I have yet to experience any form of hot yoga flooring that I liked. It all has its limitations. The biggest issues seem to be too slippery or holds onto stench and dirt too much.
I’ve often wondered if the best form of hot yoga flooring would be some sort smaller grain gravel like 1/4 inch minus. And if you sourced it locally, it would be infinitely more sustainable (and probably cheaper) than anything else out there.
My Bikram studio has a hard wood floor. It has a matte, satiny surface. It is excellent for the purpose. Wood floors are comfortable, not as hard and unyielding as stone. They wipe it off between classes with a bit of natural soapy detergent. I have heard that other Bikram studios are carpeted but that seems completely unhygienic to me.
