Body Size

I was wondering if there is a problem with body size in being able to do yoga fully. In highschool I was in football, wrestling, and track, I’ve put on a good amount of muscle. And I’ve always had muscular legs. Sence I’ve started doing yoga I’ve had to stand and stretch out my legs after doing the hero pose for to long. Will this go away and I’ll be able to hold the hero pose?

I ask because I wish to become a yoga teacher and I’m worried that because of my body shape it will hinder my yoga.

Your body will adjust to whatever activities you do on a regular basis. I’ve seen yoga teachers in all different shapes and sizes; Yoga fits them, they don’t need to fit yoga.

What parts of your legs need stretching after Hero (Virasana, right)? Do you have your seat supported there between your heels? It could be that there are a few asanas you won’t get to do ‘like it looks in the book’ in your first several months.

Oooh – is it cramping? or restlessness because you’re cutting off circulation? I forget, are you working with a teacher? These are great things to explore with a trained someone who can see what you’re doing.
