Bowel movement before yoga

I want to practice yoga. However, I came to know that the best time for yoga is before sunrise with a precondition that one should complete nature call before performing yoga.

I am trying to habituate my bowel for new timing however failed for the last 5 times. Whenever i try to prepone my natures call i feel bloating and dizzy all the day and feel all frustrated.

So please suggest me any trick /medicine/ asana you have used to over come the above.

Although traditionally yoga is practiced first thing in the morning, unfortunately not everyone can accommodate that into their schedule. I suggest you start off by practicing whenever you can fit yoga practice comfortably into your schedule. That way you can still have your bowel movement earlier on in the day, and you don’t have to be distracted and bloated during an early morning practice.

Once you become more comfortable with the practice, challenge yourself by trying morning practice again. Try Nauli Kriya before you start your practice- there are lots of youtube videos showing you how it’s done. Nauli Kriya is an abdominal cleansing practice that can help to “get things going”… if you know what I mean.

If you consistently go to bed and get up at the same time, your body’s clock will adjust. There may be that uncomfortable beginning period while things are adjusting, but if you stay consistent, things will change!

Good luck!

thank you very much. I will try again.

Hi ravi,
I have had trouble with bowels all my life. My suggestion to you is: practice in the evening before dinner when your stomach is empty. In the quiet of the evening mind can be urged easily towards the divine.

thnak you very much.

And there is another advice from my personal experience. Check if you are a vata prakriti person, and if you have gastritis or IBS. read up on these online, there are tons of materials on this. You need to understand your body and its signals very minutely. It will help if you keep a record/diary of which days you had good bowel movement and what all did you eat the day earlier.
Some general tips about having a good and timely movement are:

drink as much water during the day as you can comfortably have. An Ayurveda doctor said that people who suffer from constipation should have plenty water along with food.

Decrease meats in your diet. I personally have seen that meat causes slower movement the next day, probably due to high protein.

Have dinner about 1 1/2 hrs before going to bed. Sometimes a hot milk after dinner also helps relax that body, bring good sleep. But don’t drink it if you are already too full.

You might also find that having an apple after dinner helps.

In general have lots of fruits as salad along with your dinner.

have a biscuit or something similar with tea(if you drink it) in the morning. Some bits of food will help start the gut movement.

do not keep late hours, sleep on time and get up on time. Make this a lifelong habit.

If there is acidity having eno first thing in the morning might also help.

Also, you don’t have to do yoga very early. If you have to do it in morning you could do it right after you have had bowel movement and taken a bath. For example you could do it 7.45am to 8 am and then hurry up and get dressed, have breakfast and go to your work. And while commuting to work-if you are a subscriber of bhakti-marga, recite God’s name with you tongue without speaking it out and keeping your lips closed. Ten minutes of this before reaching work will help your mind a lot.

Cod liver oil helps too.:stuck_out_tongue:

my best advice would be dont worry about it. Im not saying to not take actions to change your eating habits or lifestyle, or bowl movements, just that dont worry that you have “failed” five days in a row. all these things about sleep time, bowel movements, time of the morning for yoga, etc… may change in time, just take worrieless action.
best to you

MRavi Mtnl,

Soon as you get up, go to the toilet and getting ready for evacuation, do Apana Mudra for 2 minutes and switch to Apana Vayu Mudra as long as you need, but upto 10 mnts. I have been doing this for several years. Results are instant.

(earch for good pictures on the internet)

Apana Mudra (Mudra of Digestion):

Method:
The tips of middle finger and ring finger touch the tip of thumb while the other two fingers are stretched out. It plays an important role in our health as it regulates the excretory system.
Benefits:
? It regulates diabetes
? It cures constipation and piles
? It helps excreting the normal waste regularly

Apana Vayu Mudra (Mudra of Heart):

Method:
The tips of the middle finger and ring finger touch the tip of thumb, while the index finger touches the base of thumb and little finger stretched out.
Benefits:
? It strengthens the heart and regularizes palpitation
? It regulates excretory system

I have a feeling that if the OP has not figured out how to shit in 6 months, they never will. :stuck_out_tongue:

I also highly doubt that we shall ever see them again....I mean they have not been that active of late.....

Geez, some people on here are very naive.....replying to trolls and spambots....necro-ing 6 month old threads....I actually 'facepalm' and 'headdesk' quite often on this site...

You guys really need to learn what it means to be 'net savvy'....it's a good thing that I am here to teach you. =/

om..nom...nom...nom....OUCH!!!@!@*%!!!

this is a good thread Ravi, and not many people are dare enough to start it  and also it is one of the major problems of modern lifestyle. Not all of us have a good diet habit and indulge in wrong food. Yoga is indeed beneficial on empty stomach and a clean body. for me a few exercises like lifting legs 90 deg a few times and pavanamuktasana helps…somepeople also do viparita karani and/or shoulderstand for a few minutes to get the intestines working. It may take some time to get the habit of morning evacuation but certain things have to be kept in mind, 1. getting up regularly at the same time 2. eating lots of roughage and water the prev day 3. doing meditation to help with stress

btw, thanks for the mudra’s in the thread…i have a lot of faith in them
namaste

I don’t mean to be overly obvious but if a student has to relieve themselves during practice please go and do so then return to your practice. It’s not that big of a deal. Don’t get preoccupied in minutia. Just practice and bring light into your cells - while tending to bodily functions and the responsibilities you’ve taken on in life through your choices.

Dear friend,

puling your legs to the chest(apanasana) about 20 times should help the bowel movement. Also, I think this is ok to start yoga practice and ones you feel the call - do what you need and come back to the practice. There are few poses that promote bowel movement.

Forcing the bowel movement will inevitably create problems for you. ONE SHOULD NEVER EVER FORCE BOWEL MOVEMENT. Use basti if you feel blocked.
