My yoga instructor really mixes up styles and stuff, which I like. She also does things that she says are more “budokan inspired.” Does anyone know what that means? Is that a general term for the martial arts?
Hi there, the only thing I know about Budokon I learned from a DVD by Cameron Shane and he describes it as a combination of Yoga, Martial Arts and Meditation.
Namaste,
The Bodukan refers to a large arena in Tokyo, Japan which is used to house a variety of martial arts and wrestling competitions. Not only did it host competitions, but due to its size it has been used in the past and still is, to host concerts as well, The Beatles held a concert in it.
In this sense “budokan inspired” can refer to a hotchpot of various forms thrown together in one arena.
Hope it helps.
Thanks for the responses. That’s gives me a better idea what my teacher is talking about. Cheers!
One of my teachers also does Budokon and likes to throw some of that into his sequence. He explains it as a very flowy practice, with emphasis on moving slowly and with control from one movement to the next instead of only holding posture.
The only thing I really like about it so far is the “dancing dog” flow. Feels great!
That all matches what my teacher does in class. And I love the dancing dog flow (even though I have to focus extra hard to keep my rights and lefts straight)!
The other one I like that she describes as more “budokan inspired” is rolling. We’ll roll into plow and then back up into something like half moon or fighting warrior. Then back into plow and repeat. It’s total focused play time!
