Is it feasible to teach myself Yoga from reading books and checking out some videos or do I need a formal class?
you should attend at least a few basic classes to make sure you get the poses and alignment correct. after that, if you prefer dvds, etc…go for it. but nothing beats a live class. btw, where in utah are you? there are a lot of good classes available.
I live in Sandy. Do you have some recomendations??
there is an excellent studio in the 9th and 9th area of slc called centered city yoga. every saturday at 11 am they offer a free intro to yoga class that i would highly recommend. also great for beginners are the fundamentals and power tools classes. good luck!
oh, almost forgot…www.centeredcityyoga.com
i have taught myself. my friends all do yoga together and make sure that we are all doing it safely. we get together once and awhile to do this. i mostly just stretch around and watch and follow the yoga dvds
i think its a bad idea to go about these things without another set of trained eyes to realign you…youre basically restructuring your body.
however taking video of your self and then watching it later can be very interesting, especially in moving meditations.
ive been taught to avoid using mirrors as it will train you to align your self in accordance to a incorrect perception of your body…but video is highly recomended.
