Can this help with balance?

I was wondering if anyone thought this might be a good tool for helping with balance? I’m looking to mix things up a bit… suggestions?

YouTube - Buku Surfer Balance Board

Hi Tracey,

I’d stick to yoga asanas (postures) . There are afew which develop balance with consistent practice. It doesn’t matter if you wobble abit at the start…keep practicing and have patience. In our culture it’s so easy to take on the conditioning that we have to ‘get it right’ straight away…enjoy the process…

Peace,

I thought it was a joke. Wasn’t it ? :o

Oh, youtube is so funny.

if you’re interested in building up proprioception, and to a certain extent balance, you can get what’s called a ‘wobble board’. i was given one to treat an old ankle sprain that had wiped out a lot of the muscles in my ankle. essentially you stand on the board and balance, once you’ve mastered two feet you point toes inward, then point them outward (heels together), then one foot, then the other (each of these positions is held for 5-10 minutes), the object is not to let the sides of the wobble board touch the floor. After working on this simple contraption i could feel that small muscles in my hips, bum, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles had all contributed to my balancing act.

i know a physio who made them by cutting a croquet ball in half and nailing it into the centre of a wood plank cut in a circle, slightly larger than the length of a foot. my current physio has them made from wood half spheres about 6-8 inches in diameter. i did a web search and there are lots of references on the web but the price of the boards is silly.

i think the asanas are definitely better for balance though. once i started doing yoga i didn’t need the wobble board anymore, though i should haul it out again.
