Can too much of yoga practice and teaching cause right middle finger numb?

I am new in teaching ( just one month full time teaching ) and i have been practicing 2 hours daily and 3 hours teaching . I started to feel my right middle fingers tips numb since last week . Am i using the wrong strength on my right palms during downward facing dog or any other poses? I checked my BP, Cholesterol today and they are perfect.

Has anyone experience this before? If yes, what should i do to make this go away?

Numbness of the fingers can be can be caused in numerous ways, so it is not possible for any of us to help without seeing you. It is a good idea to visit with a doctor and get an examination.

The numbness could easily be caused by doing asana incorrectly. You could be causing compression on some nerves in your neck, shoulder or somewhere along your arm. Without actually seeing your asana practice it is not possible to know.
Visiting with a more experienced teacher and asking her/him to asses your asana alignment could be very helpful.

Without knowing the cause of the problem it is not possible to offer a safe, effective solution…so get it checked out and let us know the cause, the I am sure some of the more experienced teachers can offer some asana based solutions.

Good luck.

Can’t really top the above reply.

My inclination would be that the radial nerve is being impinged locally. That is to say that since only one finger is tingling, a nerve branch is a more likely conclusion than a dysfunction in the cervical spine - C6.

And this is where assessment enters the picture for a yoga teacher. What sort of practice are you doing for the 2 hours you mention? Be as specific as possible.

Gordon ,

I was only doing astanga primary series. My doctor gave me medication on blood circulation as he Just found out my cholesterol was high ( the nurse made a mistake on the readings earlier ). I was not sure if I should take them as I am trying to figure out the cause of the numbness in my fingers tip. I also felt that it gets numb ( more on other fingers as well )after I teach or practice .

I asked my astanga teacher , he says it does not matter and he can’t tell more if my practice is the main cause of this :frowning: . Traditional Indian teacher tend to let it be as they believe your body will heal it on its own tho…

Confused :frowning:

Cass it sounds like your teacher is unable to help you.
Please go and find another teacher who can observe you in some asanas and asses if you are doing anything incorrectly in in the asanas which could be be creating the problem.
Is the numbness worse during any specific asanas?
It could be due to some kind of incorrect alignment in asanas where you are taking weight on your hands.

Please talk with you doctor and maybe a nutritionist about your cholesterol.

Hi Yogacambodia : doctor gave me cholesterol pills and blood circulation pills . I am taking it now and see if this helps . Doctor says yoga won’t help me , and I need to start running everyday apart of practicing yoga …

What was the name of colesterol pills? I know one eating meds for his hearts and he has dry mouth and almost all his teeth has chipped ,dried and broken in the middle and popped out. And this was cholesterol pills. Now side effects are different for all individuals.

Doctor likely does not have the slightest idea what yoga is - Stop.
Unknown if teacher does - Stop.
Cold extremities and circulation are one issue - Stop.
Numbness is another - Stop.
Especially when it has a recent onset - Stop.
