Can yoga cure?

Hi, is yoga really can cure diseases? what do you think?

why not begin the dialogue by sharing what you think?

Do you mean “dis ease”?
How are you defining “cure”?

Thanks…

Yoga works to stimulate the muscle groups, as well as nurture the glands. All around it builds strength, fosters balance in the body, which increases muscular fitness and in turn strengthens the immune system.

It will not, however, directly cure disease, but it will strengthen your immune system and make you healthier.

Yoga is a passive, meditative exercise, and is most effective when accompanied by a more active exercise (eg. swimming.)

Generally exercise does make you healthier.

Yoga also deals with healthy diet, general discipline and dealing with stress, all of which foster better health.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking an apple question about an orange concept and practice.

When one speaks of a “cure”, they generally refer to n reactive approach to health and wellness (much like the Greek God of cures; Panacea). The Panacea approach is also the dominant mindset in Western medicine - wait until something happens, then treat it with medicine, surgery, etc.

The practice of yoga is more aligned with a preventive approach to physical, spiritual, and mental health. The Greek godess of health (in the preventive sense) was Hygia - from which we derive the term hygiene. The Hygia approach is to prevent disease and promote wellness through proper diet, exercise, as well as mental and spiritual balance. It is proactive, not reactive.

The practice of the eight limbs of yoga can contribute greatly to achieving physical, mental, and spiritual wellness which in turn can help prevent disease.

I hope this helps in some way to answer your question.

Namaste,

K

Yoga cannot cure anything, but it can aid the road to recovery or it can add to your overall wellness and state of wellbeing.

In yoga view, diseases are developed by having inadequate life force or energy. The energy flow within the body may be blocked or obstructed in some parts.

This insufficiency results in lower vitality and sensibility to infection. It happens when there is a misalignment in one of the vertebras which affects the nerves transmitting energy to the organs.

As a result, organs cannot function at their optimum levels, and then a disease may develop. Many Yoga Postures stretch and relax the spine, which helps in realigning the vertebras. This explains how yoga postures can help in healing diseases.

What is “passive exercise” please?

Here are some quotes about yoga by Timothy McCall M.D. from his book, Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (? 2007). “I’ve gained muscle, lost fat and become a lot more flexible.” “What’s become more important to me is the mental peace that has come…” “Stepping out of the crazy, fast-paced world to pay close attention to what’s happening right then and there puts me in touch with a calm place deep inside me-- deep inside all of us.”

“Yoga [includes postures and meditation] is not a panacea [cure-all], but it is powerful medicine indeed for body, mind and spirit.”Dr McCall is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine who started doing yoga in middle age.

Yes, yoga can cure. Just watch the video demonstration of Baba Ramdev.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-386913693756370208

He tells you EXACTLY what to do, how long to do it, and what DISEASES are cured. It is hard to be more specific than that.

I posted this video umpteen times on this forum, several threads.

There was a time when Yoga was considered a superstition. :stuck_out_tongue:

There was a time when the earth was flat too.

Hello Swatee19,

I have 2 incurable auto-immune illnesses. Over many years of dealing with ill health I found that a combination of modern medicine, old-fashioned common sense and daily yoga was the best solution.

Modern medicine kept me alive, whilst yoga gave me back my quality of life. I have now come full circle: from being bed-ridden to being a yoga teacher!

I believe everything has its use/place in life, but all things should be done in moderation.

Hello Kate,

You are a wonderful, wonderful example of what a human being can achieve by sheer will power and faith.

If you tap the Infinite Power within, everything is possible.

Yoga doesn’t “cure” what ails me but gives me a better quality of life that I pretty much cannot otherwise function without yoga. Seriously. It is my daily physiotherapy.

Yes.

It can give you what you need.It can change the things that need changing. Or make one better than before.

The agent of that change is yourself, not a drug or outside doctor., external agent.

It’s not like you drop a pill ,nod off and expect to wake up cured. It requires a bit more particpiaaion and involvement from the subject, doing the curing. That is where the “real magic” lies. The body has it’s own innate intelligence and capacity for healing. It just needs awakened. This is done usually through the avenue of awareness.

Become your own physician/guru.

It cured my hyperthyroidism in 6 days. Now no medicines…
