Cancer and yoga

I have recently been diagnosed with bladder G3pTa cancer and going for 2nd look and surgery on 23rd October 2012.

Since I’ve been diagnosed I am doing Anulom Vilom for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, i am also going for an hour long walk. Can pranayama for an hour be harmful in any way? and is there any other form of prayanam be suggested?

The pranayama you mention can be done safely in the situation you outline.
An hour, for a beginning student, is about 50 minutes too long.

Thank you very much for your response. Would you be able to recommend any other yoga or prayanam for bladder cancer?

Yoga, on the other hand is a way of life. It includes asanas that work on different levels, externally, internally, physiologically and some say even spiritually. Just like specific exercises, yoga should be taught by an expert to get the most benefit.
Yoga addresses many aspects of physical, mental and spiritual fitness, whereas a morning walk will cater to overall circulation and well-being as well as some amount weight loss, if done briskly. However, from what you say, your doctor would have suggested it for the former.

I believe 5 to 10 minutes of Anulom-Viloma twice a day is enough to reap desired results. In addition to pranayamas, meditation and easy to do asanas aimed at alleviating stiffness and increasing flexibility also have been considered valuable Yoga method to manage cancer in terms of improved quality of life and either decreased symptoms decreased intensity and frequency of symptoms.
I believe that Anulom-viloma is the best pranayama for the cancer patients and bhramari pranayama is just a good one. Some other prayanayamas may only be recommended for associated conditions of a cancer in case of particular person.
