Can't progress with the pigeon pose

I have been trying very hard especially in the last 2 years to get my right side to be as flexible as my left side with the pigeon pose. I have had some progress but when I start out the next day it is almost as if I have only made slight progress. I am terribly stiff. I can’t get my hips to the floor on that side. Why is this? Is there something twisted inside that has to be straightened before I can do this. Or is the muscle and tissue misfigured? Is it genetic? All 3 of my daughters have a problem with their hips but that might be because they copy my movements. Maybe I favour one side too much. It is very odd and it holds me back from other things. I am 53 years old and always had a problem with the right hip off and on…mostly on. I have done yoga for 36 years detouring this problem for many years and became aware of it thru yoga teacher training and a physiotherapist in the last 7 years. I have tight T-bands and reflexors but I work on them alot…I think. Any suggestions out there?

It could be that you’re trying too hard – that is, using a pose that isn’t the next step for you. Are you working with a yoga teacher?

No I am not but that is a good suggestion. Either a yoga instructor or a physio-therapist. I was actually thinking that I could do with alittle outside vision.

It could, of course, be a myriad of reasons. I personally am not comfortable getting in to any of them without an assessment that involves in -person contact. For that reason, and many others, a skilled teacher is a reasonable approach.

Yup, I think that you are corrrect and I will seek outside vision.

Yoga is not about getting into poses. It is the journey and not the destination. You have to be okay with where your body is today. What does it matter if you never get into a full pigeon? Will the world come to an end? Will you get a yoga trophy? Just work your pigeon where it is today and be okay about it. Yoga is defined as the cession of the fluctuations of the mind and that has noting to do with pigeon.
