I am fairly new to yoga, about 1 year. Due to poor posture I have been working on chest opening poses and have tried supported shoulder pose (queen pose) a few times. I had taken a 2 week break from my practice due to vacation, and transition back to the u.s. after a year long expat assignment overseas. I practiced yoga for 1 hour and ended with a shoulder stand. That night I experienced crushing chest pressure and pain and a sensation radiating down both my arms. After spending 24 hours in the emergency room and a battery of tests, I was given a clean bill of health to my heart and lungs. My yoga teachers thinks it’s due to the chest opening poses I have been working on, and the break I took and sudden return to it. What do you think?
I’m sorry but I don’t see the difference
^^
The picture that using blanket for the Sarvangasana will help elongate your neck better and will make your neck lower than your chest, and it will make you more relax in the pose,
but i was wondering, who told you that Sarvangasana is a chest opening pose ? i think you got a wrong information on the pose benefit.
It’s there in technicolor.
One using props, the other, flat on the floor.
Dear Gordon,
I loved the use of your photo-links to
illustrate the dichotomy of approach in shoulder stand.
What a quick and effective technique; Very cool–thanks.
Namaste rolipper,
Your experience in the ER must have been scary. I sympathize with you.
Hopefully this will not happen again. In order to help you better…?'s
…and have tried supported shoulder pose (queen pose)
Was it supported like in Inner Athlete’s 2nd photo?
Also, what ‘chest openers’ have you been taught to do? As yogivid
inferred and I concur: shoulder stand is not a chest opener.
You mentioned you have teacher(s)…i.e. more than 1?
It helps if you would give more info, i.e. your age, health issues, (stress?), scoliosis?, yoga tradition
you are studying, did you eat after practice/before bedtime?, etc.
Last ?
I practiced yoga for 1 hour and ended with a shoulder stand.
Did you end this session with savasana (relaxation)? You wrote in your post
that you ended with shoulder stand. I always recommend
one to finish asanas with 10-20 minutes of savasana.
Best with Blessings,
Nancy
