Class Etiquette & Tipping?

I searched but didn’t see an answer to this particular question. Is it expected for students to tip the teacher at the end of class? I’ve noticed one lady in particular, new to our studio, always goes up to our teacher at the end and says thank you and gives her a cash tip. The teacher says thank you and takes it.

I did see a thread about tipping a private instructor, but I’m wondering about a group class like this. Is it expected? Appropriate? Am I a tool for not ever having tipped my teacher? It honestly never occurred to me before. Thank you so much for any advice!

I am giving presents at the end of my stay to the teachers at the studio I am studing at in Montreal, but i never thought about tipping but I do I always say thank you
Cheers

I am no expert but I have practiced a variety of different types of yoga at different studios and gyms for over 3 years and I have never seen anyone tip a yoga instructor for a public class. This is not customary.

Hi folks,

In my opinion, a cash tip is inappropriate. Why? Because in reality, you can’t pay a good teacher for what you’re getting in return. If you find one you’re really getting something from, let them know it by sharing something from your heart, or do something for them: a flower, an apple, a muffin, scrape their windshield, maybe, but never cash. That is tacky and can in no way fulfill the exchange.

Thank you folks! I was definitely surprised, and it made me feel awkward. I feel a lot better knowing that it’s not a “thing”.
