I am beginning the search and preparation for teacher certification.
Do you have to have your RYT 200 prior to doing RYT 500? Or can I dive straight into 500?

You can dive straight into 500. As per Yoga Alliance guidelines - [B]in order to register as RYT 500[/B], one should have 500 hour yoga teacher training certification from a yoga school registered with Yoga Alliance and [B]100 hours of yoga teaching experience.[/B]

So I would register as RYT 200 after getting the 500 hours of teacher training, and then after I myself taught for 100 hours I would be able to register as RYT 500, correct?

Yes, you are right. Other option is to get 100 hours of teaching experience (after finishing RYT 200 or 500) without getting registered as RYT 200 and apply directly for RYT 500.
