Crane or Crow? Bakasana or Kakasana? What next?

I keep seeing & hearing crane/bakasana and crow/kakasana referred to interchangeably.

Are they variations of the same pose? Are they different poses?

The theory that seems to make the most sense to me, is that arms bent with knees pressed against the outer arms is crow/kakasana, and arms straight with knees tucked under the armpits is crane/bakasana. But I keep seeing pictures and descriptions that don’t seem to follow that…?

That’s of interest to me as theory… As a practical matter, I can hold a decent crow (arms bent) for 30-60 seconds… Any tips for getting my arms straight and knees tucked? Any other poses that would be a logical “next step” from here? I just started working on side-crow, and from there the next steps seem to be extended-leg and scissor-leg side-crow.

Firefly/tittibhasana and eight-angle/astavakrasana are on my wish-list

Side-crane/parsva-bakasana  will be on my wish list, but it’s not there yet.

Thanks…

Wow good for you! I have been trying to do Bakasana but I still can’t get my feet off the ground.

Update: I can now do both crow & crane!

shezieka: Try putting blocks under your feet, and then gradually taking weight off the blocks and onto your hands. Don’t rush.

Eka pada bakasana. Yea!

Extend that leg with INHALATION y’all.

That’s how I understood the difference with the crane, is a back leg sticks out per how one may see a crane.

I tried and tried and tried to get the crow down and I finally got it but it took a long time. That said, I think it comes to some people in a much more ready way.

And I try to breath through my whole Crow…and it’s developed the forearms.
