Creating a home yoga practice sequence?

Hi, can anyone come up with some help for me in creating yoga sequences that I can practise at home.?

Ideally it would last me about 30mins to an hour, at the moment I just attend a yoga class once a week and I’d like to be able to do more at home when I have spare time.

Right now I just do random postures as I can remember them, but my aim would be to set up a sequence that I can use.

I usually start with a bit of lying down stretching and then do the sun salutation or something else… but it all feels a bit random & without structure and doesn’t follow on.

thanks

I find that books and dvd's can really help you do your practice at home. Its all relative to the type of yoga you like to do as well.

I have this book which I love. Postures are nicely explained and there are sequences pre-made for different ailments. So if you have a cold you can do the sequence for colds etc..

If I feel like doing ashtanga, then I just go ahead and do the primary series. I found this link online that is from a school in sacramento. I have no affiliation to this school but I find they have nice pictures of every ashtanga series.

Hopefully you have been taught these postures by a yoga teacher before attempting them.

There are some great free yoga class podcasts on itunes. Check them out and see what you like!

I’ve used them a couple of times and just have them play on my laptop in front of my yoga mat.

there is this site also: http://www.yogatoday.com/

If you have the opportunity to get Mark Whitwell’s DVD “Real Yoga for Real People” it will only take a few viewings to see how simple a home practice can be. Before you know it your body will know the poses and they won’t feel so “random”.
I think it is human nature to make things more complicated than they really are, but even some simple sun salutations can be your home practice. It will not replace going to a studio and being guided by a teacher, but to keep up a daily practice on your “non studio” days, this dvd is brilliant.
Best of luck,

like jlg said, free streaming video at yogatoday, and also yogajournal has a sequence creator tool to help you build at-home sequences. both of these have been invaluable in my practice!

Hi Saturday,
I’m very happy to see that you want to to start a home practice. In time, I hope you find it becoming the foundation of your practice.

You’ve already been given some wonderful recommendations so I may not have much else to offer. My home practice is based on starting with a series of sun salutations, moving into some upright poses like the warrior series and/or trikonasna, a balance or two, a backbend, hip openers and twists, then finish out with happy baby pose then go into savasana.

Its usually some variation like that - I just go with what feels right and see where it takes me. From time to time, I’ll use one of Shiva Rea’s flow series DVDs - my faves.

Hope this helps.

Namaste,

Kiran

Yoga Today is absolutely great for a never-ending sequence of yoga classes.

There are countless DVDs, so it really depends on what you are looking for. I’ve found that going on Amazon.com and reading the user reviews helps choose.

This should be developed as an outgrowth of your work with your teacher either privately or in classes over time.

Students should exit class with more tools than when they entered.

Anyone can choreograph. Sequencing is both an art and a science.
