Dealing with a lower back / tailbone injury

Hello everybody!

I have just discovered this forum and I am much delighted that I did. Now let me explain the reason as to why I sought out a yoga community.

I hurt my tailbone a several years ago in a bicycle accident, it soon spread to my lower back which is now very stiff causing me a lot of pain and discomfort. No matter what position (not yoga) I am in I feel uncomfortable and agitated. I can not sit for any prolonged periods of time or at all some days due to my pain. The doctors are clueless and have failed despite loving efforts to help in my case although I have tried many approaches such as acupunture, massage and chiropractic care.

The reason I started began my practise was because of this injury and probably would not have if I never experienced it so it’s not all bad!

When I am on the mat my pain and discomfort is virtually gone. Because of my stiffness though I am sort of limited in my pelvic tilt flexibility (I can’t bend from the hip, if I try I bend about where my lower back “ends”) and must regulate my practice accordingly.

I have now done yoga for years in high hopes that it will eventually cure my ailment but I have gotten to a point where I am kind of loosing my will to continue both my practice and my life (yes, it’s that serious) because this issue is slowly sucking the life energy out of me every single day. It is really bad and I am now looking for any kind of input on what positions and such I can do to alleviate my discomfort. I have done Ashtanga, Anusara, kundalini and Yin yoga (Anusara is my main focus right now) many many hours and they have all been a blessing to me in many ways but have not made any permanent change to my condition.

From the bottom of my heart I deeply appreciate any help I can get. Let me know if there is anything else you need to know.

Much love!

I have one private student with broken tailbone, degenerative discs, total hip replacement, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. One his leg is 2 inches shorter than the other. Dude lives in the pain all the time. Yoga helps. Yoga nidra helps. Visualization helps. Chakra work and mantras help.

If you stop practicing you will not get any better for sure:)

Iyengar said that “yoga cures that should not be endured and endures that can not be cured”.

I would say - just keep doing what you doing, whatever makes you feel better;) let me know if you want to share more about your condition…i will be happy to advise accordingly to my capacity
