Death is nothing at all

Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Absolutely beautiful. Struck me completely.

Thank you Nichole, for this message of love and permanence.

Love,
Bentinho.

You are welcome Bentinho. A very dear friend and collegue of my husband died in an avalanche in western China in late May. His name was Jonny Copp and he was on the trip with two other men who also passed: Micah Dash and Wade Johnson. They were adventurers and world-class aplinists; they were filming a first ascent in an area of China that was newly opened to foreigners. Jonny’s mother, Phyllis, read this poem at the memorial that was held for the three men this past weekend. Jonny was truly an extraordinary person–one of the few in this world living up to the potential and possibility that each of has within ourselves. This was true both on and off the mountain. I’ve added Jonny’s picture here. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you and to speak his name.

Hey, Jonny. Nice to meet you.

Wow Nichole, thanks for sharing so openly. Extraordinary story.
May he and all related to him be at peace.

Love,
B.

I know a guy who is also a climber. They share the same confident smile of people who know their strenght and it’s limits. This makes them agreeable people, as they have nothing to prove to anybody, but themselves.
