Degenerative scoliosis

Hello,

A friend of mine has degenerative scoliosis and tends to be in a lot of back pain. Are there any yoga poses that could help him, or would yoga aggravate his condition?

Thank you.

He would need to go to a very experienced yoga teacher who is well versed in using yoga as therapy for 1-2-1 sessions.
It would not be wise just to offer asanas or exercises without seeing him in person.

Scoliosis is a pathology of the postural system. The scapular and pelvic girdles are the buffer systems of posture; however in many cases of scoliosis it seems that they have stopped playing their buffer roles at the level of the spinal cord.

Force plates, allows us to formally put in evidence the study of the projection of the center of pressure of surface through he ground, that can be associated in static to the center of gravity of the body.
In these case studies, force plate will allow us to analyze the postural ossilations of an individual in a standing position, in different situation, in order to have an idea of the subject?s stability and postural system

Case studies done by (Bricot 96 ; Salanova 99) demonstrated that scoliosis could be separated into two groups; the first group is where the scoliosis is excluded from the scoliosis participation; and the second group where the pelvis is participating in the scoliosis process.

Test done on force plates have allowed us to identify 2 different types of scoliosis.

-2 different pathologies
-2 different origins
-Both must be treated differently

Scolisosis with excluded participation of the pelvis should NOT be stretched. They will get worst.
