Developing a daily practice

How Do I Develop a Daily Practice?

If you are struggling with this, you are not alone! Why is a daily practice so important? Because stablishing a daily practice establishes yoga?a healthy habit-- as a part of our daily lives. Just as we wake up and brush our teeth each morning to keep our teeth clean, we practice yoga daily to keep our minds and bodies clean and healthy. Yoga is a system that benefits the whole person—body, mind and spirit. The more you practice yoga, the more you benefit.

Can you relate? Many students begin yoga by coming to class one, two, or maybe even three times a week. At first they may feel great. Tension is removed from the
body and the mind begins to clear. They may experience spiritual,
emotional, or physical progress on a grand scale. Then at some
point they feel stuck or that they are not progressing so they
get discouraged. Other students may struggle initially with the
difficulty of the practice and feel like they will never be as good
as the person on the mat next to them. Still others may
experience lots of aches and pain. Eventually you may
begin to wonder, should I take a break? Is this for me?
It is natural for doubts, boredom, impatience, injuries and
frustrations to arise. In the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali speaks of these
conditions as obstacles to samadhi (bliss consciousness as the result
of mergence with the Atman). But he also stresses that it is important
not to allow these obstacles to distract us from our path towards better
health and happiness. It is also natural for the pace of change and
growth to slow. But how do we cope with these conditions?
