Dislocated Shoulder and Yoga

Hi,

I have a dislocated shoulder, something that happened 13 years ago, and I would like to know what kind of Yogic exercises I can practice on a daily basis to help with my shoulder joint and strength.

I’m new to Yoga, I’ve never practiced it in a group, and understand very little about how valuable it can be.

Any help and guidance would appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Kalmen,

in approaching this there are both things TO do and things NOT to do.
If you are pursuing a yogic approach to wellness as it relates to the shoulder integrity there are three elements: the poses and breath work, lifestyle and nutrition, and emotional work through meditation.

This approach is best pursued in relationship with a highly trained, therapeutically oriented yoga teacher in private sessions (in order to develop a practice protocol specifically for you). You can, from the same sort of teacher, get some things in a group or class setting.

I would be especially cautious (to say the least) with those poses requiring weight-bearing on the arms - until you’ve got the proper actions for safety, the alignment, and the strength to go further.

Hi InnerAthlete,

I fully see your point. Coincidentally, I am following up with an Ayurveda practitioner for my health in general and my shoulder and I am undergoing a pancha karma treatment. He has also told me that he will be teaching me some yogic exercises that will help me strengthen it.

Even though this is not exactly what you were talking about, I now understand what you mean, and will be on the look for someone like that.

Thank you.
