Power yoga is a term used to describe a vigorous, fitness-based approach to vinyasa-style yoga. An offshoot of Ashtanga Yoga, it has many of the same qualities and benefits, including building internal heat, increased stamina, strength, and flexibility, as well as stress reduction.

One of the effects of Power Yoga on the body is that, because of the dynamic nature of the practice, the muscles warm up quickly. It also increases oxygen intake and heart rate.

Our body tries to maintain its ideal weight through various internal regulatory mechanisms, which is the result of a complicated network of neural, hormonal and numerous chemical reactions.

Power yoga is a blend of yoga and aerobics, developed in the 1970s by yoga teacher Indra Devi. Power yoga uses poses and breathing techniques from yoga but adds the aerobic component of running and jumping.

Power yoga became popular in the 1980s when athletes and people interested in fitness began doing yoga. In 1985, Power Yoga International magazine began accepting advertising from yoga schools. By 1994, the magazine estimated that about 1 million people in the United States were practicing Power Yoga. Though power yoga can be quite vigorous, its proponents say it does not strain the body, as aerobics does, and is more relaxing than other forms of yoga.

In 1997, American Yoga magazine published a research study that found doing power yoga had health benefits comparable to aerobic exercise. The study found that yoga helped lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as improve strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility.

Power yoga is also a form of exercise that emphasizes breathing, or pranayama, along with stretching. Yoga, or asana, is a type of exercise that originated in ancient India. Yoga focuses on body posture, deep breathing, and meditation. In yoga, as asana's name implies, the body's posture is contorted into a variety of positions.
