Disturbing thought

hai,im having disturbing thought like unwanted image and words when im doing yoga asanas, pranayama n even during meditation which cause me to repeat or prolong it until the thought or image not appear. dis take much of my time.can i just ignore that?

increase the duration of pranayama, you’ll be fine.

Dear Selvan,

It is disturbing you, because you are allowing them to disturb you. The more you react against the thoughts, the more they will intensify. I had this problem in the past, I would get really nasty thoughts and I would react against them and I find this just made them more intense. I then decided that I am not going to react to them, I am just going to let them happen. That is when they became less intense and then gradually stopped.

Next time, try another strategy. Just watch them and don’t react to them and don’t judge them as good or bad. Whether you get thoughts of gardens, beaches and waterfalls or thoughts of dog shit, death and murder, treat them both the same. Just watch.

What makes a thought disturbing is the disturbance - not the thought.

Like SD said - you are being disturbed by the disturbance.

What is the cause of this disturbance?

There must be a subtle holding onto your feelings that is subconscious - and this might be the cause of the image itself !

Something is unresolved in your consciousness and as soon as you see it the image will never be the same again.

This is what meditation does - it helps us to see clearly our reactions to what are only passing images.

I therefore concur with SD’s advice on this occasion.

I also get such thoughts every now and then. However, after I started reading religious scriptures like Bhagavad Gita and Vishnu Sahasranama regularly, I no longer care for such thoughts and also they pretty much stopped.

It makes me feel better to know that I am not the only one that has had this happen.
