I read an article about meditation cushions. Does anyone here use one? I never have but I’m thinking of getting one.
I have one, it is red satin and very comfy! I enjoy using it, but i meditate in a rather peculiar position (childs pose…) So, it is nice to have the padding under my knees. I would suggest getting a two or three bed pillows and seeing if you are comfortable at that level befre commiting to buying one
Dear Mandy,
People do yoga for centuries, and use for props everything they can find in the house. Yes, now one can get special yoga pants, special meditation cushion, yoga socks, yoga bra, super grippy yoga gloves, organic cotton yoga straps, special energy non-slip yoga mat, yoga mat wash… everything you can and can not imagine:))
When I started yoga we used regular towels and blankets for mat, my spouse tie as a strap, some days we were practicing in the forest with no mat whatsoever and with no cushion for meditation.
Use you imagination and save you bucks.
Yoga path as an asketic one and buying something you can live without is considered no good:)
Ideally ( in a perfect world) they say the knees should be either level or below the hips.Sitbones, of course, level.A prop, block or cushion or whatever you like could help acheive this .
If this is not the case, no need to worry. But personally i would recommend Pawanmuktasana Series 1 (see Bihar School of Yoga publication-‘Asana,Pranayama,Mudra & Bandha’ by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, or do a yogaforum.com search here) for opening tight hips which should allow you to sit in meditative poses and/or meditation much more easily by freeing up muscles in the hip complex, legs and pelvis.
I’ve seen cushions on ebay called zafu or zen- but could’nt vouch for having used one myself but they look like the might do the trick.
If you cannot sit comfortably on the ground with kness perferably level with hips(or somewhat,a little below) ,or compfortably, then you can meditate in a chair, spine upright etc.
I would recommend siddhasana or modified siddhasana. If you cannot reasonably sit in this pose, then it it is wise never to force it or force/strain anything for that matter.
If you can just about meditate in a meditative asana on the ground,do a quick body scan or incorporate some relaxation practice(s) beforehand and practice letting go consciously areas of held or accumulated tension, first muscular tension before obviously moving naturally onto thoughts/mental activity/Mind–& Beyond
This dudes got a sweet setup.
I agree with CityMonk, my boyfriend bought me a cushion and I thought it was a waste of money and made him return it
There are many other things you can use to make yourself more comfy, I would not recommend spending your money on yoga gimmicks.
I have a buckwheat cushion and a really nice zafu. If you are going to meditate for hours and hours like I’ve done (I practice Buddhism), then it’s really worth it.
I dont think a cushion is a yoga gimmick, although you can use other items such as blankets,I have been meditating many years ,when I first started i used to sit on the flloor with some warped idea that this was somehow more spiritual,I have used cushion for many years now and am happy to do so ,so are my back and kness,Cores advice is spot on , Although I have heard that yoga is the one tradition that has a sitting practice where the yogi is to sit on floor without support ,preferably for about three hours without fluctuation of mind or disturbance in body, of course a tiger skin could be used but I dont think the tigers like it much.
Sitting with a yoga belt as in scales post above is great , that chaps hips seem very tight perhaps it was his first lesson.

I’ve never meditated for more than one hour, so my opinion was based on my own experience.
That said, it totally makes sense to use a cushion for the purposes you have described.
Mandy1 - I guess it depends on the duration of your meditation
