Stress is a common issue faced by everyone, whether it is a professional person, a college student or even a housewife. We all have experienced a situation where we are extremely stressed and unable to calm down. This feeling makes us to irritate other people around us. But stress is not a serious issue, it is actually a physiological process that is present in all living beings.

When we are under stress, our blood pressure rises and our heart rate increases. Our blood circulation gets slowed down and our breathing becomes shallow and fast. This leads to the production of cortisol which is a stress hormone. Cortisol is an important hormone and its production increases when we are under stress. Cortisol regulates the body functions like blood sugar, digestion and immunity.

The problem arises when our cortisol levels remain high for a long period of time. This leads to the formation of stress hormones. The constant rise of cortisol levels causes the body to produce adrenaline and other stress hormones. When our cortisol levels increase, the secretion of serotonin decreases and this leads to depression.

Stress can also cause problems in our body like obesity, anxiety, heart disease, high cholesterol and hypertension. So, it is important to understand the causes of stress and ways to reduce stress.
