Downward Dog Pose / old whiplash injury

Hi! I am new to the forum here, looking forward to being a part of this community!

I thought I come here for some help, tips or ideas since my chiropractor and doctor are unable to help me…

I started practicing yoga a little here and there over the years until recently this year it has become a normal routine for me. I’ve never been able to maintain a regular schedule as I keep injuring myself performing some of these poses. Long story short, I had a couple neglected injuries to my spine from the recent years from falls and accidents; neck and lower back. Now that I am fixed and corrected, I am now able to perform yoga daily! I am excited! I LOVE doing yoga, I feel incredible and alive after my workouts.

Anyhoo – to the point…I am still having some difficulties with my neck performing the downward dog pose. How are we supposed to position our neck and head during this practice?? (mind you I am hard of hearing and I can not hear these online videos or DVD since they are not closed captioned or anything to understand exactly how we are to do the poses) Am I supposed to keep my neck and head parallel with my arms? Hang my head forward…?? Is anyone else having the same kind of problem as I do?

I look forward to hearing from anyone, thanks!!

I’m personally a fan of keeping the ears right between the biceps in Downward facing dog. Some teachers instruct students to let the head hang low. I understand that this stretches the muscles at the back of the neck, but I still prefer to keep the cervical spine in alignment. We spend enough of our day with the head hanging forward and our cervical spine suffers because of it…why promote that even more in a yoga class?

I agree with Yogadealer, head between the upper arms.

A word of caution: if you are going to practise following an online lesson or a DVD, watch it through carefully first and make sure you understand what the teacher is saying before you start doing it. I even make notes!
