if i do 30 minutes of cardio, and a power yoga tape that is 50 minutes long, is this enough to achieve weight loss? i tried weight training, but #1 it bulks me up too much and #2 yoga feel so much better. i have about 15 lbs to loose (very quickly), will yoga and 30 min. of cardio be enough?
Dear Sian,
I am not an expert on weight loss, finding that my own aging body and it’s metabolism are playing tricks with me from time to time. You say you need to lose 15 lbs fast! Why? So, as for my opinion, seems to me that weight loss depends as much upon intake as output (exercize). It needs to balance out. A search of the yoga forum for “weight” may yeild some interesting tidbits for you. Here is one I copied over from Mukunda’s Q&A to this message for you.
Namaste,
Chandra

I have a couple students who have been coming for about a year now and seem very committed to a yoga practice. They are overweight and seem to keep focusing on that issue. I wondered if you might offer suggestions I can give them for yoga postures, diet, etc., that could help them in there goal of achieving a healthily weight. Both are women, menopausal and between 30-40 pounds overweight. I realize that how you feel is more important than being “skinny” but menopausal women tend to high cholesterol and other weight related diseases. I appreciate any help you can give.
Many Blessings, S

S - As for weight issues. I find the best issue is to do the Sun Salutations and Agnisar DHOUTI (pumping the abdomen while holding breath) – I believe I showed this when I was there. Sun Salutes should be increased until the student is doing all their stamina can tolerate and gradually increased as they getting stronger. Optimal is 20 minutes of practice daily. This will definitely lower weight as it increases metabolism. Also check on following the Ayurvedic eating guidelines from The Three Season Diet by John Douillard. This can help put you in rhythm with the cycles of life.
cardio and yoga are both great for weight loss, nutrition plays the biggest role though, if you are serious about losing weight you need to be serious about what you eat…in weightlifting your nutrition accounts for over 70% of your gains, it only stands to reason that would be the same for this as well, plus, if you eat better your yoga practice will be that much better as well your cardio…best of luck
im not recommending a diet, just an examination of what you eat, staying away from excessive amounts of carbs and starches and sugars, and eating more whole proteins and healthy fats, just be smart about it, and you will lose the weight, everything is simple if you just break it down to its bare elements

To make it simple:
Taking in less calories than you burn will eventually trigger fat burning and weight loss.
