I commenced Hatha Yoga in August 2010 and to date have done three classes. After each class, I am awaiting a surge of energy or at least a change of energy that one associates with post yoga session. However, I have experienced the contrary. After each session, I return to home and feel exhausted. The sensation is almost akin to awakening after an anasthetic. The fatigue is in the head more than the body. This sensation is almost over whelming and retiring to bed seems to be best practice. The following day the exhaustin is less but the fatigue is substantial. I don’t find the class particularly difficult as the pace is very easy and slow to accomodate more senior members. The duration is one hour with ten minutes allocated at the beginning and the end for warming down. I take exercise four times a week so the extreme level of exhaustion does not arise from any over exertion from a physical fitness point of view. My concern is how long will this continue?
When you are doing the class do you feel exhausted, overtired, or strained? Is it a hot class or a normal room? For a lot of people, hatha yoga has a much different effect on the body than working out does, as you are performing movements and holding body postures in a way that is new for you. There can be strain on the body from this, even if you are attending a gentle class. It will be good to take note during the class if you are ever feeling shaky or out of breath, and to take a rest in any comfortable posture until you can resume breathing normally and feel calm. You should gradually see that your body does not become to tired from the practice, and if not, it is good to discuss this with the teacher of that class. They may have experienced this themselves, or helped others to resolve it. This also may not be the right kind of yoga practice that you need. There are practices which energize and practices are designed to put people in a restful state.
Thank you for your response to my query re Hatha Yoga. The room is not particularly warm or cool. My body doesn’t not feel strained with the positions but there is a shake/tremor in the abdomen with one of the postures.I will pursue the practice for another two weeks or therabouts and see if there is any change.
1.You have to start slowly. One thing, few times in the beginning and gradually move on.
- Not many people talk about the effect of sexual lives on yoga. I haven’t seen many expert readings on these. Some yoga poses does what you call “sexual sublimation”…in other words converting your wild energy to spiritual. So Yoga soon after former can really have an impact.
I am not an expert on this as my screen name suggests. My suggestion is to listen to your body and observe what you did before and after.

I don’t understand what this has to do with the OP’s question.
well to me a couple things stick out, you say you are awaiting a surge of energy, maybe drop that expectation? also, how hard are you trying in the class, how hard are you trying to concentrate? is it possible that you are trying to concentrate too hard?
Hello Siofra,
I personally would need more information from you in order to provide a direct response to the question. Since we have not met I do not know your age, gender, health, fitness background etcetera. Nor do I know much about your practice.
