My favourite quotation is by Emerson - “Face YOur Fear and The Death of Fear is Certain”. I used always have a fear of snapping my neck in Gymnastics so I decided to take up yoga to overcome the fear. It works a treat for any fear you have in live. By facing your fear you prove your fear is unwarranted. As a wise sage once said FEAR is an acronym for False Evidence Appearing Real.
I face my fear everyday, and it melts like a snowflake.

Fully agreed. Actually tou find this method given by many authors, not only Emerson.
Good topic. However, a question arises over here. This well known way of mastering fear, does it get rid of the actual cause of fear? The very roots of it; that which creates the numerous fears we all have? Or does it just subdue or perhaps free you from that specific fear you are facing.
Any ideas what will tackle that very something which produces fear?

I think it does -for one fear only. The root cause for one fear might be at your deeper levels of consciousness, and you do not even realize that.
If you are afraid of water and you are thrown in the water and all of a sudden you can swim, this action will annihilate your subconscous fear of water.
This fear might have been inadvertently introduced in your subconscious mind,
by an accident. There is the the LOCATION of the fear. How this fear was
planted there, probably differs from fear to fear.
Take the case of hypnosis. A strong hypnotist can do many thing with a subject who is weak or unaware. When the subject develops s strong will power he will just laugh at the hypnotist.
To summarize: the LOCATION of the fears is at deeper levels. The CAUSE of the fears might differ from fear to fear.
Fear being an emotional response that is conditioned and part of human nature, I view fear as a inner guide when examined for what it really at work… Fear is intended to be part of the human experience, and it will illuminate where growth needs to occur in our lives if we dare to examine it.
If I have a phobia of flying for example… is it my control issues that create my fear, or are they based on a previous experience, etc? Working through the layers may not completely remove our fear, however, they will move us toward growth and better understanding.
Recently I started practicing Bakasana to assist me in working through some control and trust issues… I always have feared falling flat on my face in this pose, and I’m working to get past this fear (metaphorically and literally ).
Great stuff guys! Thanks for your answers.
Love,
B.
