Fear kundalini awakening

Will kundalini awaken if you dont what it to? I have read things about it that are frightening. I like the idea of energy and all but not enough to risk having serious problems. Now Im a lil weary of meditating. I dont meditate that much but, when I do its to just to rid myself of stress and other related anxiety problems. I still consider myself new to this. Do I have anything to worry about?

Not likely- There are many forms of yoga, some designed to limber the body and reduce stress and fatigue and others meant to awaken the chakras and re-wire the psych-electric circuits of the brain and spine. The latter might pose some risk of psychlogical turbulence, but only wirh pretty intensive practice. It’s unlikely that you have embarked on the latter without knowing it. You might ask a knowledgeable yoga instructor. (not always easy to find-a lot of incompetents out there) peace and good luck

What have you read that’s frightening? I am new to the practice of yoga, but I can’t imagine something bad coming from it. Exactly what is kundalini and why would you not want to “awaken” it?

Im not trying to put you off, but Im also new to yoga. I really dont feel that Im qualified enough to explain kundalini to others. Have you googled it or searched at this site to find out the meaning? There are also articles at Yoga Journal. Im sure some of the people here could give you more helpful information than I.

I do not want to awaken kundalini because I fear the negative psychological effect that it could have on me.

Kundalini is a kind of spaghetti-like pasta that is great with clam sauce…Oh wait!.. that’s linguini
It would take a kundalini yoga expert to satisfactorily explain kundalini. If you can, think of your spine and brain as a very powerful antenna that both sends and receives energy and stores it in a super-battery at the base of your spine, at your tailbone. This is Chakra #1. There are 7 chakras-some say 8-not important for this description. These chakras are like electric switches and are aligned up the spinal chord to the brain The goal of those who practice kundalini yoga and other forms of this kind of yoga is to remove the psychic blockages from these chakras - like cleaning them of debris that keeps them from making a good connection (Think of a dirty battery terminal) as well as cleaning out the pipe that runs up and down through your spine, carrying this energy. All this cleaning and unblocking is done over time by practicing some form of “kundalini” yoga. As each chakra in turn is “untied” or cleaned out, the vast supply of kundalini energy stored at the base of your spine is able to rise up to the next blockage at a higher chakra. When all the chakras are unblocked and the tube of your spine is clear of psychic obstruction, then the kundalini energy is freed to travel through your spine and brain, which is awakened to Divine energy which is then the Path to Enlightenment and realization of Christ Consciousness. That is another chapter and I won’t presume to expound on areas I have not attained.

If you want to do yoga like the vast majority of Westerners and just get some good stretching and conditioning that will also help alleviate stress, depression and other physical maladies, get yourself a book or two on that subject-probably Hatha Yoga. If you are after spiritual advancment, I would recommend “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Parmahansa Yogananda. It’s a very readable and interesting account of the life and teaching of possibly the greatest figure of the 20th century, whose impact has not yet been fully felt. I know that’s a strong statement, and I don’t strictly follow his organizational teaching anymore myself, but he was the one most responsible for bringing the teaching of spiritual enlightenment through yoga, to the West.

Now I know I didn’t really answer the question about how the practice of Kundalini might be hazardous. The answer is that one must precondition his psycho-spiritual system, if you will, to be able to tolerate the power surge of the released Kundalini energy. Yogananda described it as running 10,000 watts of power into a 100 watt bulb. The bulb will suffer. Likewise, although probably not with quite that extreme a result, the human psyche will suffer tumultuous and possibly chaotic reactions if this is done too fast. A good teacher, a conservative patient approach and trust in your developing intuition will all guide you. If spiritual development is what you want, this may be the most direct path. Sorry about the long answer. I hope I touched upon your questions. I get long winded… Peace

I may ammend my answer and add a bit. If you’re wondering where all this energy is coming from, consider this; physicists calculate that the potential energy in a human body could power the USA for 16 years. Matter is energy. Energy is all there is, and energy is spoken into existence through the Holy Vibration, or The Word, the voice of God. You are a star, a potential super-nova of light and energy. Yoga can give you the key to transform your Perceived Self into this Real Self, the ripple merging with the ocean. You think you are a bag of meat and bone, but that is the illusion you tell yourself is real. Everything; all matter, energy, and light (which are the same) are an idea of God. An Indian saint spent his life speaking only 4 words, his Mantra, which summed up the nature of the universe…“There is only God”

As a note of interest, anyone wondering about the nature of physical existence might enjoy reading this…

You did a great job explaining kundalini Dr. Baba. You simplified it so even a child could understand. Thank you. Just curious…does the god of the yoga system have a name and if so what is it? What god was the Indian saint speaking of when he said there is only one?

hi kyogagirl64

when you prey, chant, meditate, do asanas and pranayam, remember god in any way, goes near to nature, during delivery ( specifically for ladies ), very high emotional shock and many other ways. kundalini will awaken by it self or by your efforts or by shaktipat ( kundalini awakening initiation ) and at that time some basic care shall be taken.

there are two things to remember

  1. you must have a method to control kundalini and understand the symptoms ?
    or
  2. you must have some one who can control kundalini. In india that person is called guru or master.

" whenever you do any spiritual thing there will be chances of kundalini awakening, it may take years or it may happens within short time"

to understand kundalini thing properly please read following book on kundalini as it is free to download. it tell

finally it is like you must have to drive a car to travel it is depend on how and at what speed you drive, if you drive carefully nothing will happen and vice versa.

Hello kyogagirl64
There is only one God. People mistakenly believe that the Indian or Hindu way of thinking is some pagan belief system with all kinds of gods with elephant heads, snake tongues, multiple arms and blue skin. THese are all part of the Hindu tradition, true enough, but they are only fanciful depictions of various ASPECTS of God’s nature in this illusory world, created to illustrate metaphorically His actions in the world. My own Episcopal Church (don’t ask-long story-family tradition) even made the poor pagan Hindus the object of a prayer program, and the Episcopaleans aren’t even particularly evangelical. But, I digress.

The yoga traditions I spoke of before are all of course focused on our awakening from our deep dream-state into the real world of God realization, Christ Consciousness, etc, -All of them. However, some of the lighter forms of more excercise/stretching/physical training types of Yoga, although they do have the implicit aims of deepening Realization, are not really meant to be your vehicle to Christ-like attainment. Others, such as Kundalini or Kriya, are meant for the fast-track, direct purpose of Awakening.

So- as usual with me- a long and rambling answer to a simple question. Forgive me. Now to answer your second question about the yogi saint’s Mantra, “there is only God” Read that mantra a few times. He is not saying there is only ONE God, he would certainly tell you that goes without saying. What he IS saying is that there is ONLY God. There is nothing else - no time or space, no chair under you, no body, trees, birds. Nothing exists but God. This is the heaviest, most profound declaration/Truth in the universe. An understanding of this statement overcomes, nullifies any other statement, any other so-called truth, any other complex system of belief. You could spend the rest of your life, as he did, in silent, single minded concentration on this concept, many have. All of quantum physics, particle theory, wave theory, and metaphysics are wrapped up in this single pronouncement. So, I’m not suggesting that anyone should go into seclusion to ponder this thought for the rest of their life, but to evenbe aware of the idea changes your perspective.

Again, I over-answer. Your choices are three. First-You can ignore all of this hot air and go back to sleep. Second- You can learn more about Asanas (yoga positions) and do a few minutes a day of yoga excercises which will get you in shape and feeling good while combating the effects of daily temporal life. Or Third, or you can embark on a journey of untold beauty toward unity with God. One will delay your assured but only eventual awakening. One will lead you toward a healthier body. And the other toward God, which I believe is our purpose for dreaming this earthly dream. I would never presume to direct you one way or another. Your path is for you to determine. I will say this, the fact that your are even interested in these things indicates that your karma has brought you to this point. You are showing signs of wakening. The vast majority are fast asleep or comatose, waiting to work through their karma to get to the point where you are now, like the very light sleep of morning, just before you open your eyes. You are waking up. Now open your eyes

…to clarify the underlying idea of “There is only God”.
This statement means there is nothing in existence but God. The “world” we live in is an illusion, a dream, and we are asleep or comatose, and dreaming it. Since nothing exists but God then the ethereal “substance” from which is made everything we experience, is God. Call it God-substance. It is actually a vibration that brings everything into form That pencil appears to be what we call yellow painted wood, but the atoms that comprise it are just isolated points of light- God’s energy, and mostly empty space between the atoms. We are the same. We may “see” an object or person, but rather than seeing a field of vibratory light, our dream arranges that energy into a form we recognize, a form that is consistent with our dream, a form that is recognizable as a cast-member or piece of the set in the stage play (Hindu word for this play is ‘Lilah’) we are enacting. But it is all God’s vibratory energy. In simple terms, God is the stuff that everything is made of. Hence, there is only God. Now your are a metaphysician!

I love this quote about Lila from wikipedia. “It is a Lila, or sport, of Brahman. It is created out of Bliss, by Bliss and for Bliss.”

Now Im really confused.

I understand. Read" autobiography of a yogi" you’ll enjoy it and it will explain a lot

I know my previous explanation was kind of convoluted. The important part is the mantra itself-“there is only God” - the rest is verbiage. Try it this way…

Think of yourself as a ripple in the water, among millions. God is the ocean. As a ripple, you are certainly part of that ocean, but God has vibrated you into existence as an individual ripple. This ocean doesn’t really exist. God has simply manifested himself as an ocean in order to give you individual expression as a ripple. You must learn to realize your Self not as an individual ripple but an integral part of the Ocean-God. Stop indentifying yourself as a ripple but calm yourself back into the Ocean. You are not separate from God - you ARE God. just as surely as the ripple is the Ocean. Awaken from your dream of this illusion-world. It is just a movie projected on the screen of your mind - just flickering lights given form when they hit the screen. The yogi learns through time and technique to awaken his body and spirit and realize his true Self - a limitless projection of God.

I’m Spirit, I’m Truth. I’m Love Divine.
This Body-Mind only a dream of mine…

Hello again kyogagirl64
AHA! Try this one…

Did you ever see the original Matrix movie? I hope so. That movie is an excellent allegory for metaphysical thought.

  1. Neo thought he was living a life in the real world with a job, apartment, etc.
  2. Morpheus showed him that world was a computer-generated illusion plugged into his brain with that spiky thing in the back of his head, while his actual body slept in that gross, gooey pod, generating electricity for the bad machines
  3. when they woke him up with the pill, he discovered his true existence, in the pod- yuck!
  4. he later learned that the illusion-world of the Matrix could be manipulated by someone awake outside the Matrix who had Realized that it wasn’t real, but was being projected by programmers. As a new (Neo means new-Ha!) outsider to the Matrix, he also could manipulate it. Hence his ability to stop the bullets, fly, etc.
  5. One last reference to the movie - when Neo went to see the Oracle, there was a child there bending a spoon with his mind. He said, this isn’t about any ability to bend the spoon, it’s about realizing there IS no spoon.

Sad to say I have backed off meditating, which I didnt do much to start with anyway. I have also not had a yoga workout this week. I need to get over my fears and enjoy. What will be will be. I can honestly say that there is some temptation to go deeper into yoga, but at this point I will stick to asanas. Thanks for all the replies.

As do many who write of their spiritual experiences and ideas, I often fall into the trap of “over explaining”. I would hate to be responsible even only in part, for your stopping an activity you had hoped to gain from. You have absolutely nothing to fear from your yoga / meditation practices. Enjoy the muscle-toning and flexibility - enhancing of yoga asanas, such as you’re taught at most yoga classes. If you meditate, enjoy the relaxing introspection and concentration - improving mental exercises. You are many miles away from prematurely releasing any hazardous energies which could confuse or disrupt your mind. This is never a fast path. You are not in danger of getting into dangerous waters. An experienced, in-person teacher will always be able to guide you.

Again, I apologize for getting so metaphysical over your simple original question. Never stop your self-exploration. It’s why you’re here.

Dr. Baba - Wow! Thank you so much for so many detailed explanations, and thanks again for recommending Autobiography of a Yogi. I will definitely be buying that book!

When I first developed an interest in yoga, I only wanted a form of exercise that would strengthen my back, but as I have learned more about the spiritual aspects of yoga, I have found that what I want from yoga has changed. I still want to reap the physical benefits from it, but now I want more than that.

Thanks again for the detailed explanations!

If you do basic concentration meditations, then the Kundalini will absolutely not rise until your body and energetic body is completely ready for it, and when that happens it will be better than the best orgasm you’ve ever had

WoW that is intense. Dr Baba, I will not stop yoga. You have explained everything very well. I feel less fearful now about kundalini, its like everything in life, if you go about it the wrong way the results can be negative. I dont think I will be seeking it but if it happens I will be fine. I now feel confident that kundalini will not arise until Im totally ready for it.

I have given the chakras much thought and I have even visualized them when breathing. I will not consciously toy with this in any way. From what I can gather its just a matter of time before the energy is released. Im thinking years  Thanks!!
