I assume you are referring to both standing and seated forward bends. I would suspect the groin is being compressed shutting off the femoral triangle where femoral nerve, artery and vein are located. The other possibility is tightness in the posterior external hip rotators which can affect the sciatic nerve. In both cases i would recommend keeping the legs at minimum the width of the hip socket or 6-12" depending on the students size. opening the leg width is often enough to alleviate vascular or nerve compression. namaste mukunda
