Fire in the belly

13 months ago my wife and I stared to do hatha yoga, we practice 5-6 times a week at a yoga school where the style is mainly astanga, so pretty vigorous. We are 50 years old, 3 months after we started, my wife had stomach pain, acidity. The only things she would be able to eat is rice, dry fruits, some vegetable (potatoes, carrots) milk , honey. Almost everything else would wake her up at night in dire pain. She was prescribed all kind of acid controller, reflux, ect. She also saw 2 doctors specialists and had endoscopy and nuclear scanning, they found nothing. They obviously don’t have a clue and are very perplexed about her condition.
She gain a bit of weight and look very much in shape. Could her yoga practice have any part into her situation? Thank you.

When the warmest spot of the body is the belly then the Ayurvedic dosha pitta is balanced. That is sign of keeping in check the energies that otherwise in imbalance become repetitive motion injuries, ulcers, gastritis, etc. Asthanga and other fast paced practices tends to increase pitta. Unless the student is careful to seek harmony they can move their energy systems to some form of pitta troubles. The remedy is for the teacher to deliberately calm the increased pitta by starting and ending slowly and doing deeper relaxations than normal. Also dietary your wife should seek a pitta balancing diet as described in all Ayurvedic books. Especially recommend the 3-Season Diet by John Douillard. namaste mukunda
