Fitness Yoga? What is it?

Hi Guys

I found a nice yoga teacher a few weeks back who taught the typical yoga class. Poses and then relaxation at the end (I am unsure as to what type of Yoga as I am a total novice).

I had to stop because of commitments I had on that day.

I have seen advertised a Yoga class this evening but it is labelled as ‘Fitness Yoga’. What will this be? Will there be any relaxation?

Thank you in advance for your help.

With so much branding of yoga these days, who knows? More than likely it is strictly asana devoid of pranayama, meditation and all things “yoga”. Most “fitness Yoga” classes I’ve seen do have a bit of relaxation at the end albeit 5 minutes or less. Much depends on what YOU want out of a class. And that’s not to say that a good traditional yoga class cannot help with keeping you fit. It just has a whole lot more benefits than a regular fitness yoga class.

I am looking to get over anxiety disorder and tone up basically!

Pilates.

Don’t know what fitness yoga is but I use to do Power Yoga, technically I guess I still do, and many look on that as only for fitness and it left me and leaves me rather relaxed when I am done, most of the time.

But then I also learned other styles as well so I could be mixing things together

I have no idea what that means. It is best to ask the person labeling it so.

Sounds like an ad appealing to someone who is bored with regular fitness routine - running, gym, etc. - and wanting to try alternative, using the current popularity of the yoga brand.

Dear Willow83,
I believe that “Fitness Yoga” is just the name or brand name for …that Yoga teacher using to popularize his/her class. It is, definitely, not a traditional, original and authentic type of Yoga. Rather the person, quite possibly, using the Yoga technique to target health and fitness benefits of prospective practitioners such as improvement in flexibility, firmness, strength, aerobic capacity, alignment, etc. The most group classes are fitness yoga class.
