Fluorescent lights and yoga practice

Hello!

I started taking yoga classes last july.
Everything was great, but recently, we had to move to another room.
While before we were using dim lights to practice, now we have fluorescent lights above our head, and there is no way to dim them or turn them off.

I can’t relax anymore and have a headache.
But the person responsible at the gym said that it was just me, and that anyway, yoga shouldn’t be practiced in the dark or with dim lights.

Is she right? Are fluorescent lights ok during practice? Or should I try to get another room to practice?

Thank you so much!!!

Namaste Velvet,

My preference is to practice yoga in a location in which I am not distracted by external conditions (visual, auditory, etc). While it is not likely to cause injury or illness, I can understand your discomfort. Perhaps your instructor can turn the lights off if natural light enters through a window. Otherwise, if you are not comfortable in the environment, perhaps you can find a class in a space that more readily allows you to practice internalization of awareness.

Aloha,
Chandra

i prefer not to switch on any light if i can get enough natural light. like Chandra, a quiet surrounding is quite important to me. it will affect my after practise “feeling”. some smoothing music helps too.

my teacher always told me to practise in a room where it is quite and not too bright. i know what he mean now.
