I am trying to understand the yoga views on food ans according to some of the stuff I have found, it is not good to mix fruits with other foods because it makes the fruit and food ferment and become tamasic. So my question is this, Is a tomato a fruit or vegtable?
Namaste Tubeseeker,
Science says they are Fruits because it has seeds…
Also depending on how the Tomatos are grown , they suppose to carry or retain many pesticide, etc. sprayed on them. So they are also consider very “TOXIC” unless you pay 4 times the price of buying Organic Tomatos.
And according to the book by Sri Swami Sivananda called “Vegetarianism” , Tomatos are consider Sattvic.
Hari OM !
thank you for your reply
from what I have read tomatoes, according to yoga, are one of the four best foods. Tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, and I beleive lettuces, are the four super foods, someone please correct me if I am wong.
so science says it is a fruit, woudl that mean that green peppers, squash, cucumbers, etc… are fruits as well? and the science you speak of, is it the science of yoga, cause many consider yoga a science, or just regular science?
thanks

He means just science, I guess. What he says corresponds with my knowledge, too.
I know a great book, The treatment of illnesses by vegetables, fruits and cereals, by Jean Valnet. It is rather old, but very thorough. I have it on my kitchen shelf, all worn out. It is great because it is written by a physican, it has nice tables and quantities of nutrients, but it also has a very good introduction, and presents several cases from his practice. He used to be a military physican in the french Vietnam. I recommend it for everyone, it is like the bible of the garden for me. It has quite a few pages on cabbages, for example, and rightly so; it seems to be a universal panacea.
When I followed yoga classes, we also got a table with diverse food types and their alignment on yin-yang scale. Apples were moderatly yang, oranges were yin, and so on. We were taught that most people eat a predominantly yin diet, so we should focus on yang food types. Look for information regarding this aspect, if you are interested. ( I am not following this, but you might find it interesting)
What a nice video! It really cheerd me up:-)
Yes, I liked it myself because I have a tendency to get carried away and become too serious.
a great link and very interesting. he really presents something to think about in a very light but authoritative way
